So I finally got my boaters license, since I'm trying to buy a boat. Been meaning to get it anyway.

Was under the impression the online class was required. So I took and passed the online class - $30

Come to find out later I could have taken the test at the State Trooper's office and it would've only been $5, according to the lady trooper. Oh well, that's on me I guess - should've called and got clarification.

Well I get to the State Trooper office to have the "V" added to my license. - $36 for the "duplicate" fee....

so now we're at $76 just to get a boater license.

HERE'S THE KICKER...

my license was scheduled to expire in May. AFTER I'd paid the $36 fee, the state trooper lady "reminded" me that they can only renew them 60 days in advance, so mine is STILL going to expire in May, at which point I'll have to pay ANOTHER $36 to renew it.

I calmly and rationally explained how that was absolute BullShucks, and that it would've been really damn nice to have known that 10 minutes earlier. The state gives you a 30 day grace period to drive a newly purchased boat without a license. So even if I bought one later this month, I could have waited to get my Vessel license until I was within that 60 day window and save one of the $36 fees...

It's a wonder I made it out of there without being in handcuffs.

With a boat, the $36 license fee is going to be the least of your worries.

Boat- a hole in the water, surrounded by wood into which one pours money. But I love them. I'm thirty, the longest I've been without one since I was 12 was about 2 months.

You didn't have to have it added to your license right now you could have waited and just kept the certificate.

Hmmm you are mad at them because you didn't think all this out. All righty then!

I specifically asked the people at the license office and was told that the certificate, alone, is NOT a boaters license and that I'd have to get a boaters license to legally operate a boat in AL.

For what it's worth, I'm not irritated over the part about adding the V classification to my license...

I'm irritated that they charged me a $36 "duplication fee", and only AFTER they charged me that, did they bother to say "oh by the way, you'll have to pay this again in 3 months because you're not inside the 60 day window."

I did the same thing--I was about 4 weeks early for the '60 days before expiring' policy. after waiting in line all morning to have the "Vessel" endorsement added to my license, they could've said $200 and I would've paid it, just so I NEVER had to enter that regional DMV office again. I can now have my license renewed locally as long as they're not adding an endorsement.

Screwy, I know, and it took me all morning (about 3 hours) of waiting to have the endorsement added. If I had it to do over again, I'd just carry a laminated boating certificate in a boat. The regional DMV offices prove how inefficient the government can be.

Like I said, I was specifically told by the DPS office that doesn't count as a boater license and you would be ticketed for operating without a license. Now, they may have been ignorant of the law or just flat-out lying, but they said that does not count for an operators license.

Either way, it's done now and I'm legal.

You should try class A CDL with HAZMAT on for size.
Every two years you have to get a DOT physical at about $95. Then, every fourth year you have the DOT physical($95), have a Homeland Security background check ($80) then if that weren't bad enough, you have to pass the written HAZMAT exam ($35) then pay for the license renewal ($65.00)
That's $275.00 every four years!

Yes, everyone has to have a license. You have to take the states written examination UNLESS you were 40 years old on April 28, 1994 or have passed a Coast Guard Auxiliary, US Power Squadron, or Alabama Boating Basics Safety Course.

It isn't legal. You have to have the licence because you have to have a licence number so that you can be tracked if you are stopped just like a DL. They will ticket you for no license. Also, if you get a BUI, they have to have the license number to put on the ticket.

Non-residents 12 years old and older, may operate on Alabama waters up to 45 days per calendar year without having to obtain a vessel operator's license.  If operating a vessel for more than 45 days per calendar year, the non-resident must get an Alabama Non-Resident Vessel Operator's License. Non-residents who have obtained a vessel certification or license from their home state, may use that in lieu of the Alabama Non-Resident Vessel Operator's License.

What's even more strange is that we accept the fact that the state licenses a freedom.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

When I was in high school we took the Vessel license test as part of drivers ed. Every single person in my graduating class had a vessel license and I don't remember any of us having to pay a dime for it.

No, you don't. Visitors, I believe, are exempt.

Here's one for you to think about. I have a 100 Ton Masters License from the USCG, but it wasn't satisfactory for the Alabama vessel permit when all of that first came out. I believe it has since been changed and a proof of a captains license at the DMV is enough and they'll add the "V" to your drivers license instead of having to do the test. That test they give folks at the DMV was kind of entertaining to me when I had to take it.

the DOT medical card is only good for two years, and my CDL expires every four years. So, on the fourth year(CDL renewal year) you have the expense of the license renewal, the written exam, the background check, and the added cost of renewing your medical card all at once.

Nope. We've managed to let the state turn driving a boat or a car into a privilege that is a licensed, taxable event. I can kind of see the argument for a drivers license since the state is providing the roads, but the state doesn't provide the water. If anything, Alabama Power or the Corp of Engs should issue boater licenses.

Revenue source to help with Marine Police.

Same thing with states issuing a hunting license and then making you buy a permit to use a gun, and a permit to use a bow, and one for a crossbow and one for a muzzleloader. You want to hunt all four? Buy a license and four weapon/season permits.

Same thing. Revenue source.

boating is not a freedom or a right.

So, I have to get a state issued permit (tax) to operate a boat, but I don't have to get one to operate a canoe? Is canoeing a right, but boating a privilege?

I have to show a state issued ID to vote in Alabama. I'm pretty sure voting is a right.

No such thing anymore. Got stopped by a state trooper boat last year and said the marine police were a thing of the past

You don't have a right to operate a boat.

The license was instituted to help regulate BUI.

Only motorized boats require a reg and license. You, Jesus and anyone else can still paddle a boat and exercise your "Rights" without a license.

Sorry, I can't agree. The license was instituted to generate revenue. If it was needed to regulate anything.........why wouldn't other states that have an exponential more amount of boaters do the same. Florida has more boaters than any state and they don't require one las I heard.

42 states require a boating safety certificate. Alabama simply outs it in your license. It doesn't increase the cost of your driver's license in anyway. So, how does it generate revenue?

The only way you have to pay extra is if you don't get it at the time of your license renewal. Just like if you replace your line ever for any other reason.

Another thing that ticked me off with it was the grandfather date when it went into effect. I had been operating boats for years when it went into effect and was not grandfathered in. People 20 years older than me weren't even grandfathered in. That to me shows they wanted the maximum amount of people they could to have to get the permit/license..............because that would generate the most revenue.

I did look up floridas regs and they want everyone born after 1988 to have a boat safety certificate. Wonder why they didn't choose some date >50 years ago like Alabama? Oh....that's right.....they really don't need to generate revenue.

What revenue are they creating? If you don't want to pay extra, you get it when you are renewing your license and it cost you nothing.

See the revenue generation?

It did not generate revenue from me because I had a marine police officer give me a free class in the past..........and a missisippi marine police issue a different one that is valid almost anywhere......again free in a training class.

But it appears others have to pay something.

What I see is someone who didn't do the proper investigation before taking a test. He paid only because he didn't know to not take the on line course and he didn't wait 3 months for his license renewal. So, really the cost is for not investigating before jumping in.

Do you really thing other states don't charge you for taking their classes? $5.00 to take the test at the DL office is not going to fund much.

$5

That's all it cost + price of a new DL. You don't have to take a class, you just have to pass a test.

$5 dollars x how many people? 500,000?? More ......less.

How many tickets have been written for not having it? How much has been generated there?

I didn't say they were making the payroll.........but to think it hasn't generated a large sum of money is sticking ones head in the dirt.
