When does the Rut usually get kicked off at Wheeler?

Late Dec....early Jan

Depending on what part of Wheeler you hunt. But MTeague is correct for majority of Wheeler.

I have only sat a couple of times at Wheeler. I haven't seen any deer yet but there is sign everywhere so there are definitely deer.

Yeah I was mostly being sarcastic. There are deer there, I just have never had luck.

Saw three bucks together this morning at Wheeler. Two little ones and a decent 6 point. They are still in bachelor groups.

I'm still pretty new to public land hunting. Just trying to get an idea.

I have gone 3 times and seen deer every time. No rutting activity though.

I have been several times and 80% of the time see some kind of deer. I also have seen lots of tracks and rubs. Just not seeing rutting yet either.

Are you guys hunting north or south?

Ok guys, good friend of mine killed a pretty good 7 point chasing does on Dec 22. So maybe they are getting started.

A large portion of Wheeler land is under water.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think that would make the remainder of the land great for some hunting? That is, if you can get to it. I know my usual spot is probably completely under right now.

I saw a group of deer today stranded in a section that I know is surrounded by water right now. About 4-5 ft of pretty swift water at that. The area is maybe 4-5 acres they are stuck on.

I'd be willing to bet that ALL of wheeler is under water right now. Sure would be a great time to hunt if your property was where the flood waters stopped...

Ive seen those deer swim the river channel..They can leave if they need to.

Be careful of rising water..The place I hunted the 26th was underwater on the 27th!!

Saw a buck chasing a doe today just north of wheeler property.

I'll be on Wheeler today near an area i'm pretty sure is going to be slightly flooded but has plenty of trails and usually lots of sign. Hoping for the best!!!!

With this cold front moving in, should be a good week. Those deer are half fish, they don't think twice about water.

Just cane through Decatur and Hartselle. Saw about 4 vehicles along 67 and 31 so must be someone thinking it should be good. There is still a lot of water and Flint ramp is still under water and water is so high you couldn't go under bridge in a boat. Lord willing I may try to get out there the next couple days.

Yeah, I went out today, my spot is 3.5 feet under. I sat 40 yards to higher ground. I did see a single antler spike swim by, but that was it.

I too saw more then the normal amount of vehicles parked.

Couldn't get a shot, but had a good lookin 6 pushing 3 does through where I was sitting today
