1- 16 oz bag frozen chopped turnip greens 2- 15.8oz cans of Great Northern or Navy beans 1 package (1.4 oz) Knorr vegetable recipe mix 14.5 oz can of chicken broth 1 1/2 to 2 cups of water 1 lb of Conecuh brand sausage, sliced 1/4" thick Salt to taste Sugar to taste (if greens are bitter)
Put all ingredients, except sausage in stock pot. Cook over medium heat. Put sliced sausage in skillet and brown it. Once sausage is browned, add to the soup. Cook until greens are tender, or for about an hour.
If you don't cook a pawn of cornbread (with no dad gum sugar in it) to go with this, move to China because you are a communist.
This is absolutely one of my favorite soups. It is absolutely awesome. If you like turnip greens, you'll love the soup. If you even remotely will eat turnip greens, you'll like the soup.
I love turnip greens, but my wife will only eat them on rare occasion. She loves the soup.

It gets better the longer it gets kept in the refrigerator. Frogeye, glad you didn't do the Jiffy. You would likely have been struck by lightning.

You would likely have been struck by lightning. Yep...gotta be careful with stuff like that. I once put instant coffee in a microwave over, and almost went back in time!

Man that looks good oakachoy. Next time my wife makes it, she's gonna double the greens too.
I'm gonna freeze enough greens next spring to make a pot a week.

Oakachoy, your soup kettle was a staple in my great-grandmother's, grandmother's and my wife's grandmother's kitchens. Wish I had all of theirs!
Can't wait to try this soup. Thanks for bumping.

You're welcome Notso.
My wife made this again today and at my request she put about half again the amount of greens called for. Perfection. Absolute perfection. This may be my favorite soul food meal.

Made it again for the camp this past weekend. 4 of us there and everyone wanted the recipe. Dad fixed some cast iron skillet Mexican cornbread to go with it. Might have been the finest camp meal I've had.
Ya'll are just overthinking it now

3F, I just don't get tired of it. I told my wife last night that it's probably my favorite dish that she makes.

I'm glad y'all like it. I sure do. It's better with more greens in it than I wrote in the original recipe that I posted.

I made a variation with leftover BGE diced pork chops and lima beans. I can't enough of this soup!

The wife unit is in the process of making this right now. Don't know how she ever heard of it- She's either been snooping around on here or Travis's wife told her about it. I've never tried it, but it smells good. Got me dadgum hongry!. I'm about to break out the cast iron and make a big pan of cornbread.

Glad I saw this post. Mom used to make this and I loved it. Made a pot with some smoked link deer sausage this week and it was great. Very easy recipe that is perfect for the deer camp.
It does seem to create a lot of "backfires" after eating.

If y'all haven't tried this, you're missing out. Just fixed a big pot for our "New Year's meal" and dangit, it's fine! Just as good, if not better, than it was last year when I made a couple batches. Cooked just like Fur recommended in the original post, only I added a second batch of greens and another 1/2lb of sausage. Fixed a big cast iron skillet full of cornbread and ate like a pig. Another two from this big boy!
Ya'll are just overthinking it now

My wife has been making turnip green soup for years, love it! Sometimes she'll add some blackeyed peas too.

I just saw that this thread had been bumped back up and I'm glad I did. I told the wife that we needed to make a double batch of this next Monday since the temps are gonna be so cold all week.

Last batch of the year on the stove on a chilly spring day. I used cracked black pepper conecuh and Seasoned black eyed peas. Also added an onion. Good stuff Bet that'll be good, i like the cracked black pepper. Also like buying the links to make sausage dogs...

I’ve been making this for several years and I’ve got a pro tip for you. Use 2lbs of Conecuh instead of 1lb and add some of the grease to the soup.
Exact same method i use

Time to bring this thread up.. Wife told me this morning to fire up the old wood burning stove on the back porch and cook a double batch on it in the #12 Dutch oven.

Love the stuff BUT couldn't add any grease. If I sneezed I'd chit on a good bit of acreage in southwest Alabama.

When in a quick and rapid hurry you can make this with canned, cooked turnip greens. Just have to heat and eat and is ready by the time the oven is preheated and cornbread is cooked.
