I have the opportunity for a great hunt this weekend up in Tennessee. 465 acres, 300 were planted in soybeans. Only two guys hunt the land and they'll see 10 deer at a time. They are likely to lose the lease at the end of the season so they are going to let me shoot whatever I'd like. I'd like to get a racked buck, a deer with my granddad's shotgun, and a shot off with my bow...all of which would be firsts for me.
Bottom line is, I may be filling up the trunk of the ol' Camry with deer. Weather should be nice and cool and should be able to hang deer shot Friday or Saturday. The catch is, I have a meeting at church (near Hueytown) Sunday at 4pm so I am considering dropping off the deer at a processor along then way (I-65 from the state line down to Birmingham and then I-59 to Hueytown). The processor I usually use is in Lamar county and isn't going to be an option. Can anyone recommend a processor along the way? I see on the Processor thread the mention of Whitt's near Athens and Trails End in Bessemer. The one in Bessemer would be ideal, but does anyone have experience with either. I am not looking to get anything fancy done with the meat...just want a clean and straightforward place.
Also, any tips for keeping the meat good along the drive. I was going to double bag ice into the body cavity of each deer.
Now that I have planned ahead, probably won't see a deer in 3 days.

If you are going to use one in N. Bama, I would use Weaver's in Falkville before I would use Whitt's. I used Whitt's for one deer last year and wasn't that impressed. All of my deer will be going to Weaver's from now until they get out of the deer processing business.

What does he charge? Souths Finest Deer Processor in Pelham. Be 30 mins out of your way but worth it. I would have 2 deer made entirely into pepper jack snack sticks, but I like snack sticks.

Depends on what you get. If it's just normal burger and loins it won't be much different than any other. Had one last year that was like $250 but it was snack sticks, link sausage, summer sausage, some stuff that was smoked by them as well. We took one up there the other day and had it made entirely into snack sticks except the back straps and it was $150. Snack sticks are the best I have ever tried, especially the pepper jack cheese. Spear em can vouch for the greatness of the snack stick. Summer sausage is good, link sausage is dang good. If I had to pick one place to do the burger it would be the cajun burger at Edmunds deer processing in Alabaster.
