Some advice that was given to me years back...I'd told BamBam I'd get him his first rifle after he killed his first deer. When he made his first kill, he mentioned that to his God-father, who turned to me and asked "When he gets his rifle, are you going to let him sit alone?" Since he was 10, I replied "of course not". So he said that since we knew BamBam could shoot my rifle, he was good as far as deer hunting was concerned, but if I bought him a shotgun instead, he could also squirrel, rabbit, or bird hunt with me, too. Got him an 870 youth model in 20 gauge...he's 24, now, grown and married, and that shotgun, short stock and all, is still his 'go-to' for most things. He has a .308 of his own, now, several handguns and other rifles, but that little shotgun is still his favorite!

I started him shooting my .308 when he was 8. He was always very slim, so I was kind of worried about recoil, but I'm telling you; when you're that age and interested in shooting, recoil is the coolest thing since sliced bread and peanut butter! I chose to have him shoot my rifle while hunting before getting him one because I wanted to see how he coped emotionally with standing over something he'd actually shot and killed, first.
