Is there a name for shooting those deer so you quit feeding them tons of protein and corn all tear. Less mouths more food? I get the whole not bring able to control the gene pool and agree. I will shoot them because to me it's a good way to get them out of the trough. Although an older "cull" doesn't know his rack is inferior and can be fun to hunt!

I see the term 'Management Buck' thrown around a lot lately.

I personally don't need a name to justify my decision to kill a deer. But, I understand the peer pressure that causes people to seek some type of buffer from the deer farmers.

Too many people can't control their finger so they justify it by calling it a cull or management deer. I say, if you want to legally take a deer, do it. Trophy is in the eye of the beholder.

I get a kick out of people that post things like "let him walk" or "he will be a good one next year" and so forth and so on. I have noticed that most of them not all but most including myself end up killing a lesser buck or cull buck. Where I hunt we don't have a ton of large bucks now we have plenty of deer just not trophy high scorers. And honestly If I held out for a 120" + buck then I would go for years without pulling the trigger. I shoot what makes me happy and try my best to congratulate others who do the same.

How does one figure out which Does are the "BAD" genetic deer?

I've been told by some High fence guys that the Does contribute up to 60-70% of the genetics.

I posted pics before of a 5 point that was 4.5 yrs old and that was all he ever had till he died.
Before he was injured with a dart, at 3.5 yrs. old he was a 140" 10 point. Did his genetics change too?

Here's his pic

Just curious, how was that buck injured with a dart? I doubt you were talking about a 1976 Dodge Dart. The bases don't look like a 4.5 year old bucks IMHO.

genetics sometimes has nothing to do with the size of a paticular bucks antlers. injury and disease can easily reduce a bucks antler size for the next or several years.

how did the dart damage the buck??

HF breeders select does by which does consistantly produce big antlered sons, takes time(years). Selective breeding. It is not an overnight thing. It has taken years for breeders to produce the huge bucks now being produced. It isn't what they feed em.

He was a pen deer and known age. The owner darted him for what ever reason. I'd guess to cut the rack off to cool his jets. The neighbor had the dropped rack from the following year. We were discussing culls at the deer club and he broke this pair out.

The dart hit the buck in the hip bone, no other reason was known as to why the buck's rack became deformed.

Troy, I know some guys from a high fence operation that know their stuff. I've talked to a few of them about the cost of does that produce and the possibility of ever buying their top does. Especially as he called them those that are 5 deep (whatever that meant). It's not likely. The big bucks are much much cheaper. Another thing is not just this buck or this doe, but that certain combination that produces shooters.
