Where would you aim at a deer at only ten yards?

Throat patch.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

Completely depends on the shot angle. Nowhere special based on the caliber though. Either high shoulder or lung depending on what the deer gives you. Only caliber specific comment is if you are using a light for caliber frangible bullet in a magnum, you might avoid the solid part of the shoulder to avoid possible bullet failure.

Midpoint of the neck. I shoot a 7mm Wby accumark and inside 100 yard if it is a clear clean shot and I have a rest I shoot them in the neck it just ruins less meat. I know some here will hate to hear that but I shoot that rifle a lot and it is a tack driver. I clean and process my own deer and don't like all the blood shot mess if they are super close. Now if I have any question on the shot, angle, or my rest then I shoot right behind the front shoulder.

About 3 inches back from it's ear unless it's going on the wall.

If I know my most likely shot will come within 50 yards I bring my 30-30. If I can see up to 200 yards I will bring the 7mag. Anything in between is just a toss up.

I had some federal fusions out of my 7mag that blew up on a doe shoulder last year at about 35-40 yards. Wasn't pretty, ruined meat, and had she not broken her legs trying to get out of there it may have been a long track job.

I've since switched back to hornady 154 grain soft points for the 7mag and try to carry the 30-30 in thick situations. Sometimes you can't help it and they get right on top of you before they present a shot, but I try to do my best in predicting the potential range of shots.

To answer your original question I would shoot boiler room all day. It will look like a damn bomb went off most likely, but it should get the job done with a good soft point bullet.

Depends. If a doe for meat - the brain pan. If a buck where I wanted to keep the wall decorations - vitals same as always.
