I know this probably gets beat to death but I was looking at getting my son his first rifle. Cant decide on which to go with. Looking at the 223 I just think what a tiny bullet it is. For a small kid Im sure the recoil is less but has anyone had any good/bad experiences shooting dear with one? I know a 243 isn't too much bigger but wondering which would be better for a first timer.

go with the 243 and shoot 55 grain bullets. Should be on par with 223 recoil wise. Then you can work him up to 80 or 100 grain bullets later.

No question I would go with a 243 if I was choosing between the two.

I don't think shooting Varmint bullets at deer is a good idea unless the little guy is good at head shots. That ain't what 55 grainers are made for

How old is your son? My brother bought his son a 300 AAC handi rifle and it is a great little gun. Bullet is plenty big enough. Gonna be hard finding one right now, though.
Mash here.

I prefer .243 over .223.

Friends son shoots a .260 remington model 7 at 5yo. My daughters and neice started at age 6 with .243. For them I got a H&R single shot laminated stock with a bull barrel, shotgun recoil pad. Heavy gun less recoil and this gun will shoot MOA.

My son is very small. He's been shooting a youth model .243 since he was 9yo. Practice with a .22 and let him shoot deer with the .243. He will never notice the recoil. That thing is wicked on deer less than 200yds (probably more, but have not tried.)

What about a 7-08 with managed recoil ammo?

I don't guess I answered your original question so disregard. It is the route I would go though

It depends. How old is he? Has he shot any center fire rifles before?

Conventional wisdom says 243. But, here is the flip side.

223 ammo is dirt cheap and virtually no recoil. This means he can shoot all he wants without hurting his shoulder or your wallet. Practice is a good thing.

Also, FWIW, my son and nephew are both shooting 243's and occasionally my son carries a 223.

I have been far more impressed with the damage and pass through shots from a 55gr tsx in 223 vs 100 gr soft points in 243.

If he keeps his shots short, a 223 does just fine.

That's in the works. I'm collecting brass as we speak.

.243 100 grain Rem Pointed Soft Point. I hunt with my son's when I'm tree hunting the majority of the time. That little thing is deadly, it's H&R Handy with a bull barrel.

223 is small but easy to shoot; my 7 yr old daughter has used one for a few years. However for a boy I'd get 243 and keep the bullet grain low.

Not sure how big your boy is but I started my oldest daughter with a full size 7mm08 Browning on shooting sticks. I let her practice with a .223 then handed her the 7mm08 when it came time to hunt. The first time she pulled the trigger on it was killing a deer. 3 years later and you can't convince her that a 7mm08 has any recoil at all. Out of those 2 choices it's .243 all the way. But my vote is a 7mm08. You can always let him shoot reduce recoil loads to practice then slip in the good shells when it comes time to hunt. Trust me he'll never know the difference when he's pulling the trigger on a deer
