Looking for advice on how/what to keep the new puppy(choc lab) contained with during the day while I'm at work. Obviously he can't be in the kennel that long yet. We have stained concrete floors so clean up isn't too much of an issue.

How old is the puppy? I'm in the process of trying to find a puppy and he will live in his kennel while I'm at work and will be brought in to sleep in a crate at night during cold weather.

What are you concerns with leaving him in the kennel during the day?

I have several 3 month old pups and they stay in a kennel most of the day and sleeps in a kennel at night as well.

Kennel or crate is the best thing to do. If you can let them out at lunch it is better but once they get used to staying in the crate it solves a ton of problems. Just give him plenty of time to run around while you are home.

Hard to house break a pup when you allow them to go in the house. Pups have full control of their bladder around 4 months. Crate train them keep a small area in crate so pup wont go in crate.

We crate trained our dog, and I don't think I'll ever do it again. On days that nobody could stop by and let him out for 8 to 10 hours, it had to be borderline abuse. I know the vet said 2 hours for every month since birth, but dang, I just don't think it was fair to the puppy. My dog turned 10 Friday, and it still bothers me, the hours we kept him in a crate while we were at work.

He will be 9 weeks when we bring him home this weekend. Main concern with leaving in the kennel is he can't hold his bladder yet.

This is kind of my thinking. Many of you have stated at 3-4 months old he will have control. But what about the 4-6 weeks until then? I'm just trying to avoid any set backs for the pup.

You can lock him in a room and allow him to use the bathroom in there, but it will be hard to house break and enforce it. Find someone that can come by and let the pup out.

Ron - I bought something like below for my pup but never even opened the box. You are welcome to have it, I'm in Milton.

I crate trained my dog, but she typically doesn't stay in there for more than a few hours. Plus I have a dog run and a fenced in yard.

If I were not going to be home during the day and had a new pup, I would find a way to keep it contained in a bathroom or somewhere with tile floors and put the puppy pads down until it was able to let her out. I'd try and swing by during lunch or have someone else if possible.
