Question for the HVAC guys...I noticed this evening my heat wasn't turning on. I have all electric with a unit outside and one downstairs. I tried flipping all the breakers on and off.. and one of the 60amp breakers on the unit downstairs was stuck. Once I finally got it to turn off and then back on..my heat turned on. What would cause that breaker to trip? It's working fine now. The thing is 20 years old.

It could just be the breaker is going bad or weak. If it was actually "stuck" the breaker probably needs replaced. Over amping will cause the breaker to trip. Most likely happened when Your electric heaters kicked in, make sure all connections on that circuit are tight and in good shape.

I had to take some pliers to switch the breaker off and then on. This is the breaker on the trane unit itself. I'll go by home depot and buy a breaker. I've been into the unit, so maybe it will be an easy fix. Thanks.

If the breaker is on the unit, the breakers at the box stores may not fit.

Be careful and make sure the breaker in the main breaker panel is off before pulling the breaker in the unit.

^ Yep. Most likely home depot won't have a breaker that will actually "fit" in the Unit. If you end up having problems finding one shoot me a pm. We were a Trane dealer for over 40 years and Now deal American Standard, which is the same thing. I may can help out if you have trouble finding one.

If you had to take pliers to even switch the breaker, it's toast, or will be soon.

Thanks for the advice. I'll talk with a family member who works in HVAC and see if he will bring me one Thursday.

Question...My home has 2000sq ft on the main level..and 950sq ft finished in the basement. I was told by the family member above that I would probably need a 5 ton unit. He told me a new unit would cost around $10k dollars. He said he could help me out with me helping him at around $5k dollars.

I've looked into the DIY HVAC installs and I've priced units online. I know I would need a licensed HVAC to finish the install. I seen a brand new Rheem unit (inside and outside units) for around $2500-3500 dollars. And the install would be a piece of cake considering where my units are located. Does his quote seem high too you?

I've had problems over the last few years and I figure I'm going to have to buy new units soon. But $10k...and even $5k seemed high. I have all metal ducting and I don't see where none of it would need replaced. It all looks good. What does a new install cost in your area?

Thanks again for the advice.

It depends on what kind of system he's talking about. We have a line up of 5 ton units that could set a man back nearly 15k, but that's on rare occasions and the Creme de-la creme as far as AC systems go.

10k may be in the ball park, but probably on the higher side, depending. 5k strait up on a 5 ton would be a good deal. Does he mean you helping him labor wise on the install or helping him with 5k worth of I.O.Us?

If someone is going to install a 5 ton for $5000 make sure you get in writing what they will be replacing and doing. Are they replace the copper, blow the drain, new condenser pad and new thermostat? $5000 is cheap price for a 5 ton installed so I would make sure what all they are doing. A lot of guys try to get jobs by being the cheapest and take a lot of shortcuts to get cheap. You will pay more in repairs after its all said and done. Just make sure that your dealing with a quality company because the most important thing about a HVAC system is who installs it and did they do it properly? The most important day of that systems life is the day its installed if its not done right than its a waste of money.

He's family. So he would buy it and I would reimburse him for the cost and some labor charge. And we would install the unit. Installing it would be a piece of cake here.
