I figure everyone in Alabama ought to read this .

http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/big-buck-zone/2011/10/are-you-staying-top-your-coyote-problem

I say whack em all , the eastern cottontail, the bobwhite quail, and Alabama whitetail, has enough predators already , I got plenty of buddies who keep a freezer full .

Between us shooting them and the guys with coyote hounds up here, we don't have a bad problem. 20 hounds are pretty deadly on a yote. Sometimes several a day.

from the article

Quote:
Another fawn saving strategy is to manage your buck to doe ratio so that most of the does get bred as soon as they come into estrus. This results in a massive fawn drop in the period of a week or two and since fawns are most vulnerable the first month of life, and the coyotes cant eat them all, many will survive that period of vulnerability.

I bet hunters, vehicles, and disease kills way more deer a year than coyotes ever do.

They can kill zero adult deer and still ruin your deer herd if they get most of the fawns.

This article I would say clearly proves we have
1. A doe harvest problem
2. A coyote problem

Alabama is a fine state . A true Red state. A liberal bashing , do it my way on my place state . But can we not subsidize the trapping and killing of these managy game killin animals, though hunting liscense fees , to preserve the thing we all love about Alabama so much , our abundance of wild game, and our unregulated hunting . I mean for God sakes if I want to climb a tree and jump on a Deers back and slit his throat . I can do it in Alabama because spear hunting is legal . I know I got a coyote problem and it don't look like I can do a damn thing about it.

I'd agree with this. Cars kill a ton of deer, including fawns. I've seen 4 dead fawns on the side of Hwy 83 here in Glendale, hit by cars. I doubt that's a tenth of the fawns killed by cars in this county alone. Yep coyotes get some but a lot of other things, disease, hay cutting, cars, domesticated dogs, etc get them too.
We have a lot of deer here, and a lot of coyotes. Haven't seen any change in population since the coyotes arrived. I guess the places that have marginal populations get hit harder. Coyotes are here to stay and I think antler less regs need to be adjusted due to their presence. Unfortunately some states ignore this source of mortality in bag limits, etc. . Unless an adjustment is made those areas will continue to suffer from low deer populations.

You know, your right.but I have a problem say all the deer for the most part, ive been seeing entered in the deer contest have been doe,s ,spikes, and spikes.all but a few there has been a few great deer taken.but for the most part it is does and young bucks.everyone wants the doe popalation back up,just because you see one doesnt mean shoot it.and for spikes who wants to waist one of their 3 tags on a spike. I understand if you have never killed a deer ,but for all you die hard hunters.stop and think about it.

There's not doubt about it , but Hunters kill deer, that what it's all about, that's why we do it . We suppose to be the ones killing the deer . So do we want to compete with an over abundant coyote population. I don't think it would be to much to ask of Alabama hunters to put a small bounty on these animals to promote the trapping, so that alabama can preserve its big woods game population.
Doing a little math on some statistics I found on sold hubting liscense.

Resident hunting liscence sold 270,000
Non resident 45,000
If we put a 8.00 raise on resident liscence and a 25.00 raise on non resident license .

270,000 X 8.00= $ 2,160,00.00 divided by $25.00 per Yote
That's 86,400 yotes we could trap in a year across Alabama that's 1289 yotes per county and if you add the non resident side it works out to around 650 yotes a county per year that's around 2000 yotes per county per year .. Seems feasible , do any if you guys think it would make a difference , or would it take more money is so ? How much ?

I killed a spike and entered it in the contest, what's it to you bud? I was on a 5 day trip on public land, sitting in the rain for 3 days and I wasn't shooting does with fawns and neither a doe without a fawn nor a monster showed itself and being as I am killing all my deer for the freezer during bow season so I don't have to deer hunt during duck season I whacked him after I let him walk 45 minutes earlier. Hunting is different for different people. And yes we do have a coyote problem and we as hunters need to work together to address the problem. I have had the opportunity to kill 2 this bow season alone, 1 I did kill because it ran off my deer I was about to shoot and the other I purposely spooked off so I didn't have to get down and drag him off early in the hunt. What I'm getting at is I have had 2 within 20 yards in 2 weeks. I have hunted for 18 years and it was probably 6 or 7 years before I ever killed a coyote and since then my average has increased from 1 every other year to now 3 or 4 a year. If anyone thinks their population isn't gonna grow anymore then you are sadly mistaken and if you think they don't kill every fawn they possibly can then you are sadly mistaken again. They are taking a toll on our deer herd. I wish the mangy bastards would catch parvo like they did in Montana about 20 years ago.

I believe, on places that offered a bounty type system they found that people would bring in more of the species therefore making sure there was more bounty.
