Is there a limit on acreage to cut timber on to make it worth while. I know the prices and estimates are based on by the ton, but if i had 20 acres of mature hardwood would that even be worth a foresters time?

Curious myself... I've got quite a few pines on my property that I would give away if someone would just come take them down and away...

I would bet 20 acres of hardwood would get somebody out there...

If it has good access you should not have any trouble selling 20 acres of mature hardwood. I would recommend selling it lump sum and advertising to multiple buyers. Depending on the markets in your area, there may be significant differences in prices in solid hardwood products like tie logs versus hardwood veneer. If you are in an area where there is only one market for the logs and hardwood pulpwood then you may be OK selling on a pay as cut basis since it would be easier to compare pricing.

I just had twenty acres of planted pines thinned and I had a problem with the actual forester but once I switched foresters, they jumped on it without any issues.

The person to ask is timbercruiser. He helped me a lot when I had questions.

Good luck. I had the power company cut a 1/2 mile ROW across my property. I had all small limbs ground up. Over 100 tree's limbed out just sitting on the side of a dirt road and couldn't sell them. Had to give them to a guy. Hell, i cant even give away the damn firewood, left behind.

Off subject, but for a first thinning, I will only do whole tree chipping if at all possible. More $$ and less debris. For that matter, any cuttings I want the logger to have a chipper. Just had some clear cut, and they chipped the tops. Limbs, neeedles, EVERYTHING. So not only was it cleaned up, WE GOT PAID FOR IT!!

Your 20 acres could be worth $50K your part if it's good hardwood. Who is the nearest reputable timber company or sawmill to you?

I've seen 20 acre patches that had 200,000' of timber on them before. Seen some that brought more than $50k stumpage.
Naturally this is the exception not the rule, but the original poster said it was mature hardwoods......... If it is actually mature and has any kind of decent form at all one could assume that has has 75-80,000 feet of timber on his place. If it's handy to get out he could be looking at a nice little bit of money

Its in Lowndes county, and its all bottomland hardwood. Mostly oak. Im not sure who would be closest, Im just trying to get an idea if i should call someone or not. Judging by the responses, i might be on a gold mine.

Call Jay Kyzar, 334-482-3999, with Browder Veneer over at Highland Home. Great guy and he will be able to help hook you up with a competent buyer. Trying to give a value on hardwood without seeing it is impossible.
Joe Parden with Linden Lumber is another one you can check with, although the mileage is further. 251-276-3362

Off topic, but we had a deer lease in West Texas, where the land owner did not own the mineral rights. The MR owner had a drilling company start a exploratory well the weekend before deer season opened. mad

We did more beer killing, than deer killing that year.

central ala,
For the guys buying lump sum, how do you know the trees aren't hollow? I had 40 acres of large white oaks cut last year (by the load) and it was unbelievable how many were hollow. Made me sick. With his being bottomland....?

Hammer and experience.

I'd guess your 40 acres was on a hill and not in a bottom?

Both. But I didn't pay attention to where the hollow trees vs. solid trees came from.
