Hunted some land next to his place. It was all about management for him.
He let them grow. Never heard anything unethical about him at all. He didn't care for dog hunting at the time, but that being said he had a lot of trouble with dog clubs.

George owned a machine shop in Oplelika. WE did an appraisal for him about 4 years ago. At that time he had lots of critters in his office.

George's son...also a George, works for Alabama Land as a Realtor.

I was about to ask if he was in real estate. Where'd he get his money?

I know the machine shop was a very successful one for many years.

That being said, I suspect he made some cash elsewhere, not sure how. He owned lots of land in Lee and Macon Counties at one time. Those properties are where, from my understanding, all his top 10's came from.

The son is about 40 I'd guess. He worked in the machine business with him for some time. The last I talked with George (son) he was selling land for Alabama Land Company.

The father that killed the state record is George P. Mann and his son is George E. Mann.

I thought he invented some baits that made him a mint.It might have been Tom.

That was Tom Mann of Mann bait company. I think he was a brother/cousin/etc.

Are ya'll talking about a non-typical record or a typical? The Dax Anderson 181 7/8 net and 195 gross buck is the typical record.

Tom Mann was the bait guy. George Mann was /is a serious bowhunter. George owns/owned Opelika Machine and Welding when I was at AU in the early 80s and he hired some of us students to be the night time "security". I put it in parenthesis because we were really more just guys looking after what goes on more than true security.

Anyways, he was sufficiently nice for the company president. I think the company was started by his father. Mr. Mann loved to bowhunt and had his own place that very few got to hunt on. His obsession was trophy animals with a bow. On some mornings he would come in and give us the keys to his big ole brown blazer in order to take it to the fuel pump and fill it up. I know during deer season the vehicle was always filled with a cover scent. He seemed to prefer a pine scent. He travelled all over the world and had some amazing trophies in his office and house. He had four elephant feet in his office that he killed the elephant with a bow while hiding in a termite mound. He said he had to build up to a 110lbs draw weight and the shot placement was right behind the ear, angling into the brain.

One evening he had me meet two guys driving in from Atlanta and take them to his house because they were going to hunt his place with him. It was Fred Bear and Mr. Jennings of Jennings bow fame. The only other person I know he let hunt out there was Bo Jackson.

He believed very strongly in hunting the wind and was a big influence on why I hunt that way. On the few occasions I got to talk hunting with him, that is what he preached to me.

I also remember he had some kind of olive trees planted on his place that was supposed to be good for deer.

I don't remember a son, but he had a daughter who was 16/17 in about 1984 and she liked to bowhunt. They had targets set up at the shop and she used to shoot a pretty good bit.

His museum in Montgomery houses most of his trophies and is worth visiting.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Lee county has some fine deer hunting. I'd put it easily in the top 10 counties in the state for potential.

I worked on a farm when I went to school there and saw 5 bucks standing in a pasture one afternoon that were all 150" or over. It was incredible. I watched them for 30 minutes. The largest one was a very symmetrical 12 point, with about a 20" spread. One of my friends who lived on the farm could have shot the deer during the rut but didn't. He was chasing a doe in the same pasture about 100 yards behind his trailer one morning at daylight. I never have figured that out.

Anyway both sides of that bucks rack were found in the pastures that summer and giving him a 20" spread credit, he would have scored 174' B&C NET that year. Still the biggest deer I've seen on the hoof.

I saw 67 deer on that farm one afternoon while bow hunting.

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

I've been through the museum at the zoo. I remember reading that he bow hunted mostly from the ground, stalking up on those big bucks. That's more impressive to me than the bucks themselves. CD.

True from what he told me. He would get I an area that he thought held big bucks and more or less stay motionless. Very, very little movement. I know he was a very patient hunter.

I had the opportunity to spend some time with Mr Mann a couple years back. Just a down to earth guy with a ton of great stories. One of those guys who you truly listened to. A couple of those giant deer were killed near the Lazy B gas station just outside Auburn

George Mann was one of the best stalk hunters ever but he is not doing very well and his bow hunting days are long gone. He needs everyone's prayers.

There's some great stories about him in Dennis Adams old Alabama Whitetail Records. I still got the books. Loved reading those old stories about him. I think one if em said he had a plastic school type chair with a strap he hunted out of. I think he shunned much publicity except those record books and it came across he was honoring the deer not his own prowess. He was Real Deal in my book.

I grew up hunting beside him. Everyone managed big time. There are a lot of neighboring land owners that have killed monsters they just didn't end up in a museum.

And he introduced Bo Jackson to bow hunting to which Bo is still an avid archer today.
