Just read that the Rev. Jesse Jackson is in Alabama to fight King Bentley closing the driver's license offices.

Hooray, the circus is back in town. Cue up footage of Bull Connor, police dogs, and fire hoses.

One of the offices only has 2000 customers a year. Sorry, but it needs closed!

Damn. He's one of the very last that I want in this state protesting ANYTHING.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

We show the old footage and bring back all of those immages when the population of yankees gets to be too much to handle. It works too! It seems to keep them away for a decade or so.

That's less than 10 a day. What a joke.

I don't know about other counties, but in Lowndes County the closure would have no impact or very little financial impact on the State but a big impact on our citizens. The license office was open each Wednesday and was housed in the County Commission building which was provided to the State at no charge. The state isn't laying off personell so the only potential savings is the amount of gas it cost the DPS/ALEA employee to drive from Selma or Montgomery one day each week. After the closures we don't have a single license office in our entire circuit of Lowndes, Butler and Crenshaw County. If it doesn't save the state money, what is the other motivation for the closure?

closer to 4. and think of it like this...everybody waits till the last day. that means there are days that, gasp, they'd have to wait on 12-15 people...but that makes days NOT A SOUL DARKENS THE DOORWAY.

I agree. They are going to have to do something because they will have to provide ID's due to the passage of the voter registration law which requires ID to vote. They shut down the license office in minority-majority counties but then come back and say they'll find some (I'm sure more expensive) way to provide those ID's knowing full well that a Drivers License is the most popular form of ID.

It might not have an impact but for a State with the history of Alabama to step on it's pecker in this fashion is just dumb.

Yup, same problem here. We already had terrible service here in Crenshaw County. They only issued on Mondays, and that woman from Montgomery took every possible Monday off anyway, so we were lucky if we had two days out of a month to get licenses issued. Now we have to drive to another county, and basically take an entire day off to fool with it. It really doesn't change anything for us except for being even more annoying.

Very little if any of DOT's budget comes from the General Fund. DOT is funded primarily through fuel taxes and federal funds. The closures are purportedly a result of ALEA (formerly DPS) having its budget cut in the 2016 General Fund.

That problem is exacerbated in most rural counties where transportation is already a problem. One of our county commissioners would allow folks to use his truck to take their road test in Hayneville because they had no vehicle of their own. It will be nearly impossible for those folks to find a ride and borrow a vehicle to travel up to 6o miles away to try to get a license. It will only increase the number of drivers on our roadways who are unlicensed and most likely uninsured.

What pisses me off is that last night I heard him say that there were Black People who would be negatively affected and have to transport their kids to neighboring towns to get their license. What about the poor white folks who are just as affected?

Hello they are closing the one in my home town too and I aint got time to take off work and transport my WHITE kids over to the next county either. I guess since my kids are white they can grow wings an fly over there. I told my wife he and a few more are the biggest problems with racism we have in this country. It makes me sick
