So, like a dummy, I ran my New Holland TC40D out of fuel this weekend. I was able to get it started back up by adding fuel in the fuel filter. It will start and throttle up just fine, no issues. But when I do anything that uses power - such as try and go forward with any amount of speed, especially up a small incline - it just bogs down until I let off the hydrostatic pedals...then it throttles back up fine. I can creep forward in low, but it just bogs right back down on the smallest incline.

I tried bleeding the fuel system, the bleeder screw, the filter, at the injectors. Still no go. I'm trying to get someone to go out and look at it. Someone else thought maybe I picked up some trash out of the tank when I ran it out.

Anyone have any ideas what else I can check if I can't get someone to go look at it? Unfortunately I don't have it with me, it's up at the camp so I can't go mess with it again for at least a week.

When this happens on our New Holland we disconnect the fuel line that goes to the tank (the far end of the hose) and blow air through it. I've heard it gets air bubble or something in it. Blow air until you hear the bubbles in the tank. I also have noticed it happens mostly when I am low on fuel. I try not to let mine get below half tank if possible.

Change the filter. Running it out all the sediment in the tank went to the filter.

Agree with marshmud991. Change the filters. I've had this same type of issue with trucks and farm tractors.

I had the same thing happen to my deere. I always keep the filters changed and when this happened I thaught it was the fuel pump so I installed a new one. I still had the same problem. It ended up being a inline fuel filter I had no idea was there. This filter can be anywhere from the tank to the injector pump. Mine has a fuel cooler in front of the radiator and this is where the filter was on mine. I hope this helps. Oh the filter cost me $6.

The fuel filter looked clean to me, but that is something I will try if needed. I was wondering about something being in the line from the fuel filter back to the tank somewhere. I guess it's possible I created some issue with the fuel pump as wells?

I'd say you have a clogged filter. Could be fuel filter or an in line filter. My kubota has a filter/screen over the hole leading to the fuel line that runs to injector pump. If you run it out it will often suck all sediments to thst screen which causes it to act like you are describing your tractor.

Im dealing with the same issue, only mine just died, not out of fuel. Changed fuel filter, got it cranked, died 5 min later. Mine revs up and down when I do get it cranked. Its still in the woods now. Mine is a massey Ferguson 265

I think you have air in fuel line. NEVER let a diesel run out of fuel !!!!

Change the filters before you start force feeding it with air.
