Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.
My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

If I had to pick any public area my choice would be Lauderdale WMA. I hunted this area hard until about 8 years ago and just never went back. Together my son and I probably killed over 50 good racked bucks off this WMA. We had a small tract of private land we hunted a lot so that helped our number count also. This spot is like buying real estate-it's location, location, location. There are a lot of great spots to hunt that will produce every hunt if you can find these funnels that let deer move away from hunting pressure. My son and I hunted a "canyon" that produced every time we hunted it because deer used it to get away from the hunters. We killed some great deer there, but getting them out would kill a pack mule.
Give it a shot and spend an entire week walking and looking. You will find some areas that will produce for you.
I can't stand a thief.

Lauderdale also has good camping areas if you go that route.

Some of the military bases are out of this world, but pure public land I'd have to go with Barbour WMA. Maybe Oakmulgee a close 2nd.
We were on the edge of Eternia, when the power of Greyskull began to take hold.

Are you looking for large bucks or just hoping to put meat in the freezer (which is fine). Large bucks. I will not be hauling a doe or small buck a mile out of the woods.

If you can get to one of the early gun hunts at Bankhead then it should be on right at the start of the season. Choccolocco WMA does have some rutting activity early as well but it is a little more hit or miss there. There are some grown ones in Bankhead if you can get on them. is this a draw hunt?

No. The WMA inside of Bankhead NF is Black Warrior WMA if I'm not mistaken. They have certain dates of when you can gun hunt. All other times you'd have to hit it with a bow. If you get on the NF then you can gun hunt all season. A few guys I know from grad school have had some luck on the WMA gun hunts there. I hunt at least the first gun hunt at Choccolocco every year. It produces deer for me consistently but haven't killed any wall decorations out there. Normally I'm able to knock down a doe and watch some little ones run around until I get good and ready to drag her out.
