Unusual to see them out this late. Last time I heard them take off like that, some moron had flown in to U.S. Airspace and would not identify his aircraft. Just heard about six take off headed toward the gulf with full afterburners !!!

Like I said before. I see and hear them every day. Only the second time in 5 mos I've seen them do that. They do night training regularly. But not like that.

As far as I know... Im in the Air Force but not associated with planes other than when they need protecting.. I was told by a maintainer that is what it cost per plane.. When I was in Afghan they took off in 4's and 8's pretty often and that shucks will wake the dead...

Let me text my buddy that was a maintainer and see if he knows what they run on and what it coast

They use Jet A with additives the Air Force changed over to that from JP-8 couple years ago in the states anyway. Fuel Cost to fly one of those would be around 7-10 thousand dollars per flight depending on weather or not they have on externals or not. They don't hold very much fuel comparatively speaking.

We sometimes support Tyndall here from Pensacola. I know they take Jet-A from us and Barges.

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

Yep Mike, they converted us over to Jet AA about a year or so ago.

JP8 gets used in most forward deployed areas and functions as a "universal" fuel, as it's formulated to work well in every environment from desert to polar regions. You can run everything from diesel trucks and generators to helicopters and jets on it. Basically everything except what needs gasoline.

Back in my F-4 days we planned on 1000 lbs for start, taxi and takeoff. High level flight we burned 100 lbs a minute. Low level we burned 300 lbs a minute. Afterburner was 3000 lbs a minute! The good news was you got where you were going really fast so you didn't use it very long. grin

It was really awsome...the last time we were able to make a beach trip, we went to mexico beach. Those 22's making approaches to tyndall were so low, you could see the pilots faces. We could hear them way offshore doing dogfights (maybe?)...and see the contrails while they were out there.

I recorded this in 2009 at Kandahar AF, Afghanistan. The afterburners and then the song got to some folks.

Yep. The combination of intelligence, physical condition, hand/eye coordination and sheer nerve/swagger that it takes to fly a high performance fighter is a rare commodity.
My oldest son is in Air Force UPT now. They have to fill out a "dream sheet" on what they want to fly, my suggestion was F22's. You'll be close to home, lol. I think he is leaning towards the bomber community. B-1's is his top choice right now.

NORAD was conducting readiness drills/evaluations at several installations last week and this week...could be the cause of the scramble...

I live next to Eglin AFB. Fighter jets take off all day and night here. Nothing new so I doubt it was a 'scramble'. If you want to see a scramble, should have been down here during 9/11. That was a month straight of scrambles. Hundreds of fighters in the air at once day and night.

Just an update on my oldest. He has finished up UPT at Laughing AFB, Tx and is currently training on flying C-130J's in Little Rock AFB, Ark. He will report to Ramstien AB in Germany in September. He is enjoying it and loves the C-130 mission.

I don't mind buying those boys jet fuel. A lot better spent than wasting it on food stamps.

I was at Liberty base in Baghdad for some CIED training when Toby Keith came there. My buddy and I decided to go watch, and sure as hell about 40 minutes into the concert, here comes mortars.
After the all clear was given, Toby came back on stage and said, "F#@! those guys, lets have a concert." Every body there hooted and clapped and he got back to business. Was pretty cool.

I didn't even think that jets had dogfights anymore. I thought they could shoot other jets out of the sky from over the horizon...

They can, but they still practice. Vietnam taught them a lesson about putting aside dogfighting technique, that's how the Top Gun schools came to be.

Not to derail but ... I grew up in Fort Worth TX during the Vietnam war. We lived less than a mile from Carswell AFB which was a SAC base at that time. KC-135's and B-52's were rolling around the clock.

Anyway, one day a KC failed on liftoff, you wanna talk about something that will wake the dead, dang I can still remember it and I was like 10 years old at the time. It felt like we had been nuked ...

I got a chance to work on the emergency rescue trucks on the flight line at Eglin and just to see and hear one start up would make your hair stand up but when they took off nothing but chill bumps and adrealin. then you wonder why any dumb arse country would want to mess with that?

We went Cobia fishing on a Wednesday a few months back, we got a great show from the Angels when passing Pensacola. 5 of them up for 30 minutes or so. It was awesome, and caught a Cobia, that blackened was also awesome
