Anybody use surplus 4895 and if so do you use IMR4895 or H4895 load data? Based on what I'm finding it appears to be IMR4895 and VERY similar to H4895 but NOT the same.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

IMR4895 hopefully not from the 1940's and not Russian surplus or RG4895 or...... You need to know what you are getting and how old is it? Always start with a reduced load when using Surplus powder just because it is not as consistent from lot to lot.

It is US powder, not RG or Russian and it's only a few years old. I know where and how it's been stored by a very knowledgable reloader. I just needed to confirm IMR as the load data to use for it.

I hear people say that IMR 4895 is the same as H-4895 but I don't go long with that thinking, it may be but I would rather look up the two powders and work from the listed charges on a case by case basis. If it were me I would take the lowest of the two between IMR and Hodgdon and work up from there or perhaps you could contact IMR and give them the lot number and they could possibly look it up for you.
But who prays for Satan? Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most?

Agreed.
You use IMR4895 load data to start and bump it up as needed. They are not the same. Visually or otherwise. Best practice is to NOT look at the burn rate chart and substitute anything "close". That's where these people are tying to say it is the same. Try again.

Non-sense!
IMR4895 and H4895 are now and always have been interchangeable. The 1.5% - 2% difference in maximum loads is a rounding error occasioned by conversion from PSI (the military standard- for Improved Military Rifle- IMR) to CUP. IMR data is calculated by direct PSI measurement and tabulated. Hogdon measured in CUP and converted to PSI for tabulation.
Surplus 4895 is Duppnt IMR 4895
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms sounds more like the perfect convenience store than an effective Government Agency

Look, not everyone follows the rules. I typically speed down the interstate. If someone asked me how fast they should drive I'd say the speed limit.
If you want to substitute them that is fine with me...
First rule of reloading is DO NOT SUBSTITUTE POWDERS.
So my suggestion is DO NOT SUBSTITUTE POWDERS.
