my wifes family sat with her gma at their house, when I was younger. Seen something at my buddies funeral, last year, that I havent seen before. One of the family members was taking pics of the corpse. I told my mother about it a few days later, and she said folks use to do that back in the day. When I was about 10 or so I came across a photograph of a dead baby in a little casket. That's when I found out out my dad (an only child) had an older sister who was stillborn and someone had taken a picture of her in her casket. This would have been in the early to mid 1930's. Dr. B

I have lots of funeral pics from the 40s, 50s and 60 that my parents attended and took pics of the deceased. As a kid, I remember going to homes of some deceased folks and the casket would be in the living room for a day or 2 before the funeral. And I remember some of my grandparents and other older folks saying that they wanted to be brought home and not be 'laid out' at the funeral home.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

One of my neighbors did it about 8-10 years ago for a young(20-30) guy who died in a car crash. Not sure if it was over night but it was in the house.

I am 53 years old and back when I was a kid it was a very common thing. I remember my great-grandfather passing away in 1971 and they brought his body back to his home. It stayed there for 2 days and folks sat up with his corpse during the night.
It seems to me if I remember right that it was more common to do that than to not do it.

they call that a wake. The practice started in France. Folks would stay up all night to watch the dead for burial the next day. The practice was started to have someone stay up and keep the rats away. I just read something today that said the practice was started because it used to be common to drink alcohol from containers made with lead and that the lead would leach into the alcohol and if a person consumed too much they could go into a short term coma where the vitals were almost undetectable. So people started staying up with the body for 2 days waiting on them to "wake". If they didn't they got buried. Not sure of the accuracy but found it interesting.

Im only 38 yrs old but when my great grandmother passed and they brought her to the church for visitation but they left her all night till the funeral service the next day. I dont know why this was the case but I was a pallbearer and someone said we should set up with her. I volunteered to do it out of respect. Boy that was a long lonesome and very odd night! I would suppose not many men my age can say they actually did it. I am 40 but I also did this with my Paw Paw. It was between my junior and senior year in high school. I talked to him all night about the days we spent fishing and the summer days I would help him dig potatoes and pick stuff in the garden. I enjoyed one last night with him like that.
