Yes, you are good to plant sunflowers and mow them down a little at a time. Here is a document that specifically states that standing crops may be manipulated to attract doves. http://www.outdooralabama.com/hunting/DoveBrochurefinal.pdfThere was a ruckus caused by a federal agent last year in Central Alabama over a field of top sown wheat. Lots of state folks got involved because it happened on a state sponsored youth hunt. I am still waiting to hear if any decisions will be made on the legality of hunting over wheat.

You better be getting on those sunflowers, they take over 100 days to seed out if I'm not mistaken, you still have a week or two left to get them in the ground. I think sunflowers mature quicker than that like around 75-80 days. I have planted them a few times and they are always ready WAY early or have been for me compared to my millet. I plant black oil and always have tons of birds before season coming in feeding on the seeds that fall out early.

best field is to plant several plants(millet, sunflower, etc) in alternating rows. Bush hog small strips starting a couple of weeks before season thru the first three-four weeks of season., disc strips of bare dirt between some of the rows, birds like to land on bare dirt. Shoot the heck out of them and run if ya see the GW coming!!!!!!!
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Wheat on a new pond bank has made some of the best shoots I have ever had. We have lots of ponds

Shoot the heck out of them and run if ya see the GW coming!!!!!!! What is illegal about it. I thought you could bushhog and still be legal? My plans were to disc the outside edges then plant a strip of millet and sunflowers then disc then plant, etc. I was gonna go in and redisc the rows that were not planted about 10 days before season and plant wheat for our food plots. It is existing food plots that were replanting.
