Yeah, I agree that it is Grandstanding!

But, I have become very paranoid of Politicians!!!!
It could also be designed to take the attention away from something else. Or, leverage to manipulate some other situation.

How safe are the funds ear-marked for Conservation and Forever Wild?

Good call. They are not safe because of the last vote which took place that I was arguing against, but everyone said to go ahead and vote for it. This is exactly what I was afraid of, and it is an excuse to raid the Forever Wild trust. This is also probably why Greg Lien who is sharp as tack and knows the game well is making the closures very public. Just my guess, but it is obvious that will be the next move.

I agree with ya Skinny. No way those parks closing is the only option.. At least not all of those. Seems to me that it's a coordinated effort in Montgomery to bring the pain. I don't see how those in charge of the park systems wouldn't be pulling out all the stops to try and make ends meet on their own. Hell if I ran the show, I'd go all Oak Mountain and start having lottery hunts if it were that bad. of course I'd start posting pictures of 200" bucks that were "seen on the property". It just seems real damn lazy to just close since there's going to be a budget cut. I bet they could petition the public as well and receive a butt load of funds..

Fact is this smells really fishy.. I wonder how long they've had this emergency plan ready to roll once there was a budget "crisis".

I disagree with this. If the government should be in the park business is up for debate, but I don't think institutions that are profitable should be administered by the government. The government should be there to provide services that are not profitable to private industry. Private industry and capitalism take care of the rest.

The politicians have been salivating over the Forever Wild fund, and the other earmarked funds for a long time now. They use these budget "crisis" moments to raid them to pay for their special projects. Its a very typical Alabama politics move that George Wallace perfected in the 1960's.
Fact is, they could issue a long-term bond to cover the shortfall without voter approval and put it on a 99 year pay out. But that would be seen as borrowing money we don't have which does not go over well in the press.

Yes it will. FW is seen as a big pile of cash for that shiny new toy that you really want really bad. Its burning a hole in their pockets. The problem is, we all know that they will waste it on whores instead of keeping it for its intended purpose.

I wonder if there is anything that We, the People, can do to stop this??
I mean, Forever Wild seems to get overwhelming Public Support. So, that is obviously not enough!!!

Have politicians ever really cared about the public? They only care when it comes time to vote.
Its not just FW that is going to be victim of this, there are other trust funds for specific things that are also going to be raided. Those funds were created to protect and preserve important things to people. I have created trust funds for my children, would it be ok for me to raid them to pay off a gambling debt? Seems like Bentley wants to do just that.

AL State Parks Division lives on crumbs compared to most state agencies. For example, they drive hand-me-down gov't surplus vehicles and then run them until the wheels fall off. Greg Lein is doing an excellent job as director too. They are lucky to have him.

Right, Forever Wild gets 10% of the Royalties with a cap of $15 mil/year.....while the General Fund gets the rest!!!

So, they have used up 90% of the Royalties and are salivating over the 10%!

And, as Skinny said, the wording of the amendment that we voted on to fund Forever Wild allowed them to use the money allocated to Forever Wild for land acquisition in 'times of crisis'.

In other words......the People's vote mean basically nothing!
