Anybody shooting TSS in a 12 ga? Most of the combos I see are for the 20 ga. I'm about to start patterning my 11-87 and 870 12 ga for TSS. I have a Rhino 660 and a Jellyhead 665. I'm looking for the tightest pattern at 40 yards. Generally speaking, should these chokes give me the performance I'm looking for or should I try something else?

These will be 3" shells.

I'd try something else. From what I am hearing TSS will barely break the skin on one.

Haha. I read that, also. I'm too deep in to turn back now. Lol

Are you sure you want the tightest pattern possible? Here's what is possible using a 2.25 oz load of tss#8 at 40 yards thru a SBE with a .670 Pure Gold choke:

400 hits in a 10" circle; there shoulda been 562 shot in the shell. Looks to me like the kill pattern is about 8" wide. This load was just for fun; no way in the world would I hunt with it, though it might make a good 100 yard coyote load.

With my gun and a 2 oz load, I get 220-240 in the 10" circle, and that is plenty tight to kill a turkey way further than anyone should. Kill pattern is about 16" wide at that distance.

I tried my hunting load in an 870 with a .670 PG choke and it was too tight for me. The Remington barrel is larger in diameter than the Benelli, so a .670 choke is more choke in the Remington that in the Benelli.

I think both of your chokes will shoot extremely tight patterns; way tighter than is needed. I think a Remington needs something in the .675 area, or maybe even bigger. Good luck with it!

Just for reference I got 301 in the ten @40 with my 1187. This was with a 21" barrel and 8x9 TSS. Same jellyhead choke that you will be shooting.

We are shooting 3 bps 12ga and one Winchester 1300. I'm shooting the tightest shooting one with a iC 665. It's around 58% in the ten with the 2 1/4 load. All are around 50% in the ten. One is shooting a Carlson's 670, hastings 670 in the Winchester. One a flush mount 680 that is a good hunting pattern gun, like 45% in ten. 20 in wide kill zone.

I wasn't jabbing at you, but at that thread.

And for the record, I agree with you. I have pulled many TSS out of the breast on a turkey. #8's at that.

You think that's tight with 9's and 8's duplex. Try 4's, looks like about a 8" core to me.

Glad I'm scoped

Feller hooked me up with some 3" 8 & 9 mixed. I'm sending it through a .675 -.680 fixed choke OU . It's rough on them.

Glad you are too! smile

Winchester has sure found something new in those shells, but I wouldn't wanta use them for traditional-style turkey hunting. I need some room for error.

Preacher,

I'd love a pattern that tight, of course, until I missed one.

Thanks for the replys.

I'm getting 220-240/10&20 with 8/9 mix in my 870 with a Trulock .690. This is the same gun preacher was talking about and it will put around 330/10 with a 670 . I needed a little wider pattern

I just shoot an ol cheapo flush fit choke in my 12. Never even counted the pellets I just looked at the pattern and knew it would kill a turkey a lot farther than I ever wanted to shoot at one.
I did shoot a load of TSS 4's into an 8"x8" rifle target at 60 yards......I'm thinking there were about 60 pellets in a real even pattern. Probably would kill just about anything short of a brown bear at that range if you held on his neck.
