I was told, years ago by a DCNR official, that the summer prohibition was to protect the deer and keep people from harassing them in summer.

Said official is no longer with the agency. Maybe some of the new changes being made will include opening public lands to the public throughout the year.

The problem, Clem, is that that attitude has already been ingrained in the regulations and will be very difficult to change. Even if a lot of those people are gone, and they aren't all gone, the current crop of officials grew up under the same regulations and see them as the way things are done even if there is no biological or conservation minded reason for it.

I understand what you're saying but after seeing some of the changes and hearing about other discussions, I'd have to disagree that the current brass is too stuck in the past.

I'm surprised the spring squirrel season hasn't been publicly proposed already, to be honest. It should be and should be put into place for 2016. Doubt that will happen now, though.

I hope so. There is biologically no reason to not allow hog or coyote hunting on public land all year long. Hardly anyone will hunt the summer anyway. I don't know enough about squirrel biology to say one way or the other about another season for them but if other states do it with no ill effects I see no reason not to try it if the research supports it.

I say open squirrel season all year round. If we start to put to big a dent in the squirrel population (which I don't think will happen), then go back to a closed season for part of the year.

Most of the year, people don't really want to hunt squirrels anyway.

May season long overdue in my book. Lots of other states have em.

We killed 433 last year off of my dog that just turned 2 in march. Most don't consider them finished out until they are 3+years old when they fully mature

Man, you guys got me wanting a squirrel dog. I got a beagle/terrier mix that looks just like a Jack Russell. I don't think he's got a good nose. I've taken him to the squirrel woods and also tried him as a blood trailer. He ain't much on either. He did put a squirrel up a tree on sight the other day. He's vicious on possums and dillos that come in yard. Are there squirrel dog breeders around and what does a good pup cost? How do you train other than just take em to woods? Knew a fellow with a Russell who said it would both squirrel hunt and blood trail.

I've got a pup that's about 3 months old I've been thinking about getting rid of. Smart as a whip and listens well. I just don't think I'm going to have time to train him.

consider a OMC, Bugman got some real good connections on some real well bred dogs up that way. Nothing against the feist, I just prefer the cur's. My cur came from real good bloodline and cost 250.

Oct 15 isn't much better down here in SE Al. I'm all for it opening earlier, at least you can bump one out to your dogs all along.

Georgia opens August 15. When I lived there I enjoyed hunting from then until the squirrels started getting warbles a few weeks later. Then I would quit until cooler weather.
