I've hunted 3.5 days so far this year and killed 5 birds I'm liking these odds but not the amount of time I've gotten to hunt this year so far.

I ended up sitting up ALOT closer to the birds this morning than I meant to. I walked in and was sitting down when I heard a hen and she was close, to close for my liking. I got situated and sure enough the gobblers and jakes started firing off and there was a bunch of them. The hens started pitching out and it was DARK. I was worried that I wasn't going to even be able to tell the jakes from the gobblers if they came by me. The hens worked out in front of me and to my right with 3 jakes that were strutting, gobbling, and yes even drumming. I've never heard a jake drum before but one of the 3 that were stayin with the hens could roll like a big boy. That really surprised me. There were several jakes chasing the longboards off and it being pretty dark it was hard to tell which was which at times. A bunch of birds were roosted to the left and had pitched down and were already going away from me so I knew if I could ever pick a longboard out I could make a loop and try to get on them later, but i probably had 50 or so birds out in front of me in the pasture. Finally I saw 5 jakes chasing a longbeard from my left through the woods and headed my way. Sure enough they drive him into range and I dumped him. All of the birds scattered and ended up going the same direction gobbling and fighting the whole way. When they got it of sight I got up and went to try and find the other group of birds. I ended up finding one gobbler out strutting in a wheat/cotton field but he wouldn't budge. I did a big circle and got near where I thought he was headed and called a few times to see if I got an answer and I didnt. I eased up toward the field and saw a bunch of jakes running around and a gobbler way off to their right so I hit the ground and backed up into some bushes. I pulled out a mouth call and talked a few times and heard nothing. I heard something behind me at one point and had turned to see why it was and when I went tn turn I saw a gobbler at 100 yards freaking out trying to find a way under the fence. He finally figured it out and put on a good show strutting and gobbling for me. I didn't know if he was going to close the gap past 75 yards but a little sweet talk had him to interested and got him shot. The first bird looks like a good 3 year old, the second is a 2 year old. I found a pretty good shed when I went out to pick #2 up and saw a ton of these tame deer out here. We saw a roadrunner yesterday and I had one come in on me a few minutes ago to investigate. If they can be called in they are big a enough to be some fun to hunt. I walked back to my original setup to stash my second bird and there is a gobbler out in the pasture all alone.

Brb...... I hear hens talking back to me.

Alright, she wanted to throw down, but she didn't bring any gobblers with her. she made it to about 5 feet before she pumped the brakes. I thought I might finally get attacked by a turkey and was kind of looking forward to it.

Clearly you're hunting inside a high-fence...

Me and this bull are about to have a serious disagreement. Every time he sees me he starts bellaring, pawing the ground and trying to bow up on me. Ain't no rocks and the sticks all have thorns in them.

Sticks and rocks? You have tss, but may need a bigger cooler to bring a whole bull home.

Man I love Texas. We used to go to a ranch in Sabinal that was bowhunting only. 13k acres of prime deer hunting. This place had the most turkeys I had ever seen, but back them I just thought they were a noisy deer scaring corn eating bird. Thinking back at all the oppertunities I passed up to shoot one with my bow so I wouldn't mess up the deer hunt makes me sick. I just didnt have the turkey sickness back then I have now. Guess Im gonna have to plan a trip west next year. Anyway congrats on the kills. Pile em up deep!!!!

I was surrounded by birds this morning, but could only get one to break away from the groups. He came hard but got to 50 yards and wouldn't budge. I could've killed him but I would have to swing hard right and shoot. Didn't like it and let him walk off. Got on two more good gobbling birds but they did they same thing. Just hung out at 65 yards looking into the bottom I was in and wouldn't budge. They walked off too.

This just wasn't my morning.

That's what you get for losing all that weight. That bull sure wouldn't have done that last year. grin

Congrats on the hunt this morning. Looking forward to more carnage updates and pics.
