Ok, so I'm new to th Alabama region. I am from Maryland. My old lady's family has some property in Macon county and I was curious as to if that area has a decent population of feral hogs. Was considering taking a trip down for turkey and pigs but don't know if it's really worth my time. It's a long drive and a lot of gas money so any help any of you could provide would mean a lot. Thanks.

I believe it's in the hybart area. Or atleast that's the address anyways. It seems to be just north of Franklin. Thanks for the help. Appreciate it lots, normally seems like nobody wants to help you.

Monroe County is a long way from Macon! LOL

But the same answer applies. Hogs are heavy in both counties.

How do you recommend hunting them. Spot and stalk or set out bait for a couple days, or still hunting. I've never shot a hog before and it's been a dream to kill one with my bow. But I'm not against shooting one with a rifle or shotgun either. Appreciate the input. Just don't want to go in blind.

If you haven't walked the property - I would encourage you to take a walk around - specifically covering any wet areas that could be used as wallows. Look around the fields for rooting activity - it will stand out like a sore thumb (or more like a bombing range). Also, use your eyes and nose - you may happen across an area that they use frequently to rub against, you will probably smell it before you see it. It will be about knee to thigh high and covered in mud and course hair - my experience is that it is normally a hardwood (which makes absolutely no sense to me, I would have thought a pine to get some of the sap on them - maybe they like the rougher bark on our property hickory seems to be the tree of choice) .

There are some guys on here that are freaking unbelievably knowledgeable about feral hogs (I'm not one of them - although I've killed more than my fair share) that will offer some very sound advice about killing them. I'm not going to list anyone, because I don't want to exclude someone.

They are not as hard to hunt as people would have you believe, but you will definitely need to hunt downwind. I've never killed one with a bow, but then again - I've never hunted them with a bow. I've killed a bunch with a shotgun (buckshot - during deer dog drives), but rarely got a DRT (dead right there) kill. Any deer rifle, with a properly placed shot will drop them in their tracks. All of the hogs I've killed were either on a dog drive, still hunting, or popping a cap in their skull while in a trap - I haven't had any success stalk hunting them.

BTW - welcome to Aldeer and Alabama. If you haven't already chosen - you need to pick your college team before you are arrested. I would recommend Alabama laugh

Don't bait if your planning on turkey hunting or you might go home with a big ticket.

Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

You are right about that, but...since you're talking about hogs (especially on private land), I am sure you will gets lots of advice on how to kill them.

Just be careful about getting into specifics when asking about public places to kill those of the feathered variety! thumbup
