Hope this works! Dropped my barrel while giving gun a good cleaning, it landed on the end of the barrel while the choke was out. Now I have a crack that is just shy of a 1/4". It is a Rem 870 Express Mag, using a thick, extra full choke. This is my only shotgun and was wondering if it is ok to shoot if my choke is in? Thanks.

I would say no.....any crack is a weakness.

maybe a gunsmith can chime in, but I wouldn't shoot it.

I would think the barrel needs to be cut and re-threaded. What kind of gun is it?

Got in touch with my dad. I was giving him the sob story of what happened to his WONDERFUL SON, sniffle sniffle :D, asking to borrow one of his shotguns to hunt in am ( he is very protective over his stuff). He then told me that he has an extra barrel for the same make gun in his safe, bout to head over to get it.. again, thanks for all the help!

actually it originally bent it. It fell about 3' onto my garage floor. it was enough that the choke would not go back in. It cracked in the mending process.

I obviously said a few choice words, but really didn't think much of it, just simply because it was distal to the threads and small, I figured the choke took the impact. Today at work I mentioned it to a fellow coworker (who is a aldeer member) and he hesitated and wasn't as confident as I was. Thanks QuantumXo you may have protected me from a hard lesson learned...

You are correct that the choke takes the force. This is because the threads on the rem choke are a lot deeper than the damage to your barrel. I am not telling you it's OK to shoot, but if it were mine, it would not concern me. That being said, I have had shotguns come in where the barrel looked like something out of a buggs bunny cartoon and pealed like a banana back from the muzzle from being full of mud when shot. The only damage was to the gun. Judging from MY past experience, IMO if your choke were to blow out, the worst case would be needing to cut, ream and re-thread the barrel and you need to do that now. Of course doing it now, you don't risk loosing your choke tube.

Just put a little duct tape around it and it will be fine...............seriously, 870 barrels are cheap enough to not risk a bad injury.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I would tig weld the choke tube in permanetly. It would be one of a kind.

If that barrel is long enough, it could be fixed for a lot less than the cost of a new barrel. It would be a little shorter but for turkey hunting, that ain't a bad thing.
