I'm looking at buying a truck from a guy in TN. Looking at the Madison County tag site I saw where I have to pay local sales tax on a vehicle that I buy out-of-state. Why is that (other than the obvious money-grab)? Seems to me that this is just a rip-off.

Anyone know the actual reasoning behind it, or is it just a sorry-azz money grab? mad

Because you are not required to pay TN sales tax on the vehicle?

What would be fair about your neighbor buying a used car in your hometown and paying sales tax on it, but you go spend your money in Tn. and then you not having to pay sales tax on it?

Isn't there something in the AL tax form to account for items bought on-line that don't have state sale tax?

Because Obama said you gots to pay "your fair share". I'm sure you've heard him say it.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Remember, these are hard times and the cost of running a municipality goes up. Have to pay taxes to keep people in jobs and keep the city/county running. Lol
Kinda like the drivers license increase, because they can. Some are ok with it.

Same reason you have to pay sales taxes on a used vehicle even though taxes were paid on it when new.

Yes, there is.

Its called Use Tax. Also companies in Alabama that purchase items from outside of the state and do not pay sales tax on the item are required to file a Use Tax Return each month just the same as a company files a Sales Tax return each month.

That isn't something new. It has always been that way. Any item you buy out of state that you don't pay sales tax on when you buy it, under the law, you are suppose to pay it in Alabama. This includes anything you buy on line.

Not just Alabama, but every other state in the Union has the same rules. I really miss Amazon.com before they started to collect local sales taxes.

That also applies if you buy a vehicle from an individual. When you go get the tag you are required to pay sales tax on the purchase price.

If you are buying from private party, get them to write you a bill of sale for $100.00
