Very cool. Growing up in Ohio I never imagined living somewhere that I could catch a Great White.

Never been a huge beach guy I enjoy going for the food and sometimes even getting in the water but that officially just ended.....holy crap you imagine how bad that could get during spring break and it was hungry? ?? But it is pretty cool seeing one caught I will say in the Gulf.

I can pretty much guarantee you that at some point spring breakers have been in the water with a white and didnt know it. Someone didnt catch the first one to wander around on the coast. If you knew what was out there swimming around it would scare the crap out of you.

Sharks are like kittens most the time. Been diving for a while they wont get aggressive unless you have a dead fish on you....

Yeah that's why I get so aggravated at the "news" stories about "all" the sharks. They are there all the time! Morons!

My inlaws used to have a house on the intracoastal in orange beach and my dather inlaw swore that there weren't sharks in there. I would just laugh at him and tell him there was probably one right under the pier as we spoke.

I have lived near the coast for all of my 57 years and also own a condo on Navarre Beach. I fish the Gulf piers regularly and can tell you that there are sharks everywhere. My buddy, Roddy Pate, caught a 14'5" hammerhead off Navarre Pier in the late 70's. Ernie Polk caught a 10' mako off Navarre Pier last week! White sharks are very rare in our area so that is an amazing catch. The only other one I know of was caught by Elmo Horine at Navarre Pier in the late 60's. It weighed 247lbs.

Back in my younger beach going days I use to swim way the hell out to the sand bars on pcola beach. Had some rather large fish bump me a couple times and suddenly the water turned brown. That was my defense mechanism. Young dumb and full of......beer. I'm older and wiser now. Yall can have the beach.

I hate the tax man. He's part of the mix but I still hate them. He'll break your back, rod, jig and line.

You go and swim and don't worry about them. You don't not go in the woods in the summer because of snakes, you wouldn't not go on an elk hunt cause bears are in the area, I don't not swim in lakes cause there might be gators.

If you worry about things you can't control you'll die from exhaustion way before any of those scary things kill you

we used to shark fish off the jetties at Destin pass at night. before all the buildings went up. We caught some BIG sharks and lost some real monsters. We used huge shark hooks, like 8-10"s, 1/8" steel cable, 1/2 rope and still got broke off.....

younger brother and buddies went down there and would swim the whole bonita bait out by hand, drop it, and swim back to the jetties...AT NIGHT!!!!!!!

Tax man is another name for sharks because he is going to take part of what u catch. Man in the gray suit is another name.

A squid inks & extreme chits. I'd say both are rather good defense mechanisms

I witnessed this for the first time a the age of nine. My daddy and I were trolling right off of Inlet Beach for kings one afternoon and I hooked one that about snatched me in the gulf. This fish was a beast and in my nine year old mine it was the world record king mackerel. Daddy didn't touch the rod and I managed to reel it up to the boat and when my dad went to gaffe it the tax man bit the dang thing in two! It scared the ever loving chit out of me! Now my daddy was a crusty ole dark tan skin salt water man and had pretty much seen everything you could offshore living and growing up fishing in Panama City Beach but that was the first and only time I ever heard him say GD and turned tee shirt white.

Tourists need to be more worried about the mako's that roll up in here in the spring following the cobia migration. Spend a couple sunny days in a cobia tower and you'll think twice about swimming in the gulf. I'm talking 400-1000 lb stud makos right on the sand bars. Google search "snapper trapper mako" and watch the video of them catching one that was right around 1000 a couple years ago within 100 yds of the beach. Google Mako shark destin, fl and you'll see a bunch more pics. Four of us rigged up last spring with snatch rigs and snatched one free swimming out of the tower off Navarre that was around 500. 4 cobia rods with 30 lb mono and 60# braid and he just swam off like nothing was happening. Once the first chaffed off on his tail, it was all over. Unbelievable how strong those fish are. One bite and youre dead with something that big.

I love fighting a 50lb king that "gets off" then you just pull up a head and gills.



My favorite are the the tuna trips I see pics of at the Ram on a summer night. 150# yellowfins head only.

I told a buddy that goes out there often I think a good prisoner "relocation" program could be implemented as well as paying for some high dollar entertainment. Take child rapists and molesters out there on a hot summer night. Idle out 100 yards from the Ram Powell or Beer Can rigs when the water is exploding and let em swim for it. If they can touch the rig and make it back to the boat they are free. Strap a slit open 30# blackfin to their belly for good measure.

Some of my buddies caught a mako a few years back that was 1063 pounds and was caught right off the beach at Navarre. I read today where they said the PC white shark was the first ever caught off the gulf coast. In the late sixties, Elmo Horine caught one 247lbs off Navarre Pier. He was featured on PJC's channel 8 network. A friend of mine still has the picture stored away somewhere and has been trying to locate it.
