Hey to all! I'm new to the board but was wanting to know if anyone has ever hunted the Coosa County side of Lay Lake near Little Tom road. I am interested in some property there and to get to it you take Hwy 55 across the river and go to Little Tom Road. Any input as far as deer taken in the area, clubs you hunt/hunted in the area, etc. would be great. Also, is it a well populated deer herd in that part of the county? Thanks in advance!

I grew up hunting there when it was Kimberly-Clark land back in the 70's til about '92 and all you had to pay was $12 bucks for a permit then it started getting leased out for hunting clubs and I couldn't afford a club then, but the years I hunted from Little Toms Marina all the way to Marble Valley we killed some nice deer and always saw deer. Sure do miss them days and hunting that area. What its like now I have no idea.

I live in Coosa County. I hunt a club that is actually just inside Clay County, right near the line. Midway Hunting Club. I didn't see a buck at all last year but they are around, I could find rubs and scrapes, just no luck connecting. But other people in the area have killed some decent deer. Several members go to the Coosa WMA and hunt as well.

I hate to tell you but that area is or was shot out. I hunted that area when paint creek had it and if you saw 10-20 deer you saw a ton oh and that's for the year. I did kill a really nice 8 that year.

I went and looked at this property myself about two weeks ago as its only about 15 miles from my home and for the minimum bid of $8.00 this in my opinion is not worth that as I didn't see very much deer sign but there was some turkey sign. parts of coosa will rival any parcel of land anywhere for hunting purposes but I don't think this is the one.

Did they ever thin out those pines toward the back of the property. There was a lot of timber freshly cut couple years ago. Should be getting better. If I was a betting man I wouldsay it gets hunted all year long since no one is leasing it

Thanks for the input guys and yes it is through Alabama Power. So, it seems as though some of you know the layout of the property. Can you share more about pines/hardwoods/cutover etc.? Also, if we won the bid, we would be hoping to only harvest some does and mature bucks only. Secondly, do you know who has the lease on the Cahaba Forests LLC property that joins it?

I hunted that area, if I understand you correctly. The club I was in was ran by Reagan Whetstone. I saw one deer in 2008. It was the biggest one that I ever killed. There were not a lot of deer, but the ones there were big. We were close to a fish camp of some sorts. I think it is now called God's Country Hunting Club or something like that.

Mostly pine over that property with one good hard wood strip that run close the river. Lot of older thined out pines. Rolling ridges and hollows. I really like the property. Just didnt see slot of deer sign. Couple old shooting house and wood ladders on it. Didn't like the fact that you couldn't havd a camp on the property either

You were in it the year after I got out then.

I was in that club several years ago and still hunt near there. The deer hunting is marginal. The turkey population has dramatically decreased. The pig hunting is not great either.

I was in it one year when it was still Paint Creek and that club has been talked about here before. I said then what I'll always remember about Paint Creek was the way all the guys that ran the club would run to the WMA on days it was open. I saw three deer that year. At that time it was full of turkeys, but I think numbers are down all around here now.

I was in Southeastern Hunting Club one year and there were some big bucks on that place. Numbers were not that great.
