Working shift work, 12 hours this week I havnt walked in the back yard in a week or so. Today I ventured around the back and I could smell what's either a doe or a buck. Have any of you every smelled "that smell" while walking through the woods? If so what's the best way to hunt it?

Usually, if I'm smelling one, I am already dressing it. But I'm pretty sure I have smelled them in the thick woods though.

Absolutely. Rancid piss musk odor. I got up on some fresh scrapes last week. Nearly made my eyes water. I backed off immediately about 25 yds and set up under a cedar tree. Within 20 minutes a large doe came sneaking by. She's in the freezer now. I could have waited for the buck but it smelled so bad I wouldn't have wanted to eat him anyway.

Yep. I've smelled them many times. Once I was in a tree stand and the wind started blowing real hard and continued to do so for a long time. I had decided to just get down and call it a day when I smelled that familiar smell. I sat tight and within 5-10 minutes a buck came sneaking in.

Yep, sure have. I was trying to think of a good equivalent that I have smelled outside of the woods and the best I could come up with is it smells like a zoo pen. Just that heavy, musky piss smell you get from the giraffe, elephant, or exotic deer pens.

If you want to really smell it and have no doubt what it is, get downwind of some switchgrass in Illinois in the rut.

No mistaking the smell of a rutting buck. I have a weak sense of smell, yet I can smell areas in the woods where deer are scraping heavily before I get to them. You also can actually smell the deer many times when they are close. Not a very pleasant smell to me. All you have to do is smell a "billy goat" to experience the same thing.

yes a buck in rut really smells bad. I shot a buck last year but smelled him long before he came out.
