I was sitting in the stand this afternoon when 3 dogs came running by me down the road. I swung the door of the shooting house open and shot at one through the trees running. I'm pretty sure I missed because there was no dead dog, blood or any sign that I even hit him. I haven't seen hardly any deer at all this year and I think it's because of these dogs keeping the deer run off and I have also got about 8-10 different pictures on trail cams of these 3 I saw this afternoon along with a few other ones. Did I do more harm than good by shooting at them or should I have just let them run on through and watched them go by?

I use to have the same problem. Warden told me to find the owner. If they didn't stop them or put them up. Catch them and take them to the pound and call the owner. Sound like a lot of work but the owner will get real tired of getting his dogs from the pound.

GW said not to shoot them cause as soon as you do they will be high dollar pure breed mutts.

Stop hunting, it is obvious you can't hit the side of a barn.

Not saying the dogs should be there... BUT, the dogs aren't keeping your deer ran off IMO... Now let the bashing begin.. You may have a short between the seat and steering wheel, on the low deer sighting.. grin

We are dealing with dogs in Macon Cty as well. Last week riding wheelers on way in to afternoon stands we saw a nice mature buck cross just feet in front of us being chased by a curr. Both were wide open hauling the mail. Ten minutes later I had just got into shooting house and a doe comes wizzing by with another curr in hot pursuit. Anger got the best of me and he is no longer with us.

Fast forward to yesterday. Fellow lease holder is hunting a lock on in woods. Hears noise coming and it is two pit bulls following his walk in trail to the stand.

I just assumed the dogs were the problem because at the 50 acres I hunt on its one of those places where you can always go and see deer and it was very unusual not to see at least one deer. This year I've deer hunted quite a bit since the duck hunting has been awful and I've never seen it to where it's been this hard to just see a deer. I also realize that it's hunting and there's no guarantees on seeing something ,but I'm just comparing years past to how it is now. My other thought was maybe I'm hunting it too much?

Dogs do keep deer run off in my opinion. Last year my uncle had 2 dogs that loved running deer, most of the deer I saw were running from those two dogs. Over the summer they both went missing. And this year I have seen a dramatic increase in deer sightings.

I have mixed feelings about this as well. I had to shoot two dogs last year that got in to our chickens and killed them all. The dogs were wild mutts that had been cruising our land for several months so they had it coming.

I understand wanting to stop the dogs but it is illegal in most states to shoot dogs you find on your property unless they are harassing you or livestock. On the other hand, if the idiotic dog owners just let their dogs run wild, then to me, they become wild dogs and no longer a pet. The dog is just doing what they do and have no ability to interpret boundary markers.

see my thread in Dog's topic. I'll say there are good owner handlers and there are bad ones. I still would never shoot a collared dog. I will also say that dogs can and will get away from their owners..just happened to me today but she is in training and tracked, microchipped. etc. If somebody shot my dog I would come off the top rope on the azz.

I love the rut. The woods are like a bunch of roided up meatheads fighting over a girl.

Sounds like those dogs are habitual offenders that probably cant be rehabilitated wink Any pits that follow me in the woods will get to meet overly paraniod Rob Lowe.

Two of the three dogs are very large bulldogs of some kind and the third is a border colley maybe 6-8 months old but I've also got pictures of a big German shepherd. I'm not all that worried about them being aggressive to me but my pregnant wife goes hunting quite a bit by herself while I'm at work and don't wanna take any chances on what they might do if she walked up on them while going to the stand and back to the truck.
