Do many of you guys hunt food plots? I'm not a bow hunter (would love to learn someday though) so I need some advice getting deer in range. I've got a couple of little girls that love to hunt with me. I bought a crossbow a few years ago just to play with and extend my season. The girls love shooting the crossbow but don't like shooting the rifle. They have gotten good enough with the crossbow that I now feel comfortable letting them pull the trigger on a deer. Problem is I really don't have good places to take them in the woods at my place. I usually take them to a shooting house overlooking a foodplot because it's comfortable for them (and I want them to keep coming with me). Problem is, of all the deer I've seen on those plots I can only remember a handful that would have been within the range I would let them shoot. Any strategies you all use to draw deer in closer? I'm going to put up a couple of double ladders in the woods next year but wondering if there is anything I can do on these food plots most of which are 100-150 yds across. I can't remember exactly what the plots are planted with but it's a basic mix. I'm wondering it would help if I planted something different, more enticing, in a 30 yard radius around the shooting houses. Do you think that would help at all? Any other ideas? Of course this is all planning for next year. For now, I've got a pop up blind I may use in the woods. Otherwise, I'll keep taking them to the food plots hoping one gets within cross-bow range (but keeping my rifle handy just in case). Thanks

I was going to say get off the plot and hunt the trails coming to it. It is better to see five deer in range than 100 way out there....

But I see you problem. You might try the ground blind. It hides movement good and noise some. Set it up off a trail maybe 25-30 yards and wait.

Or for next year one of the double ladder stands, those are my preferred stand for taking other folks when guiding.

If you hunt these fields a lot then you should know where most of the deer come into the field and which way they feed the most. Take the blind and set it up on the edge of the field close to there and leave it. Give the deer time to get use to it then take the girls hunting.

About September 1st, put a ground blind on one of the plots where you have knowledge of deer entry from past experience. Needs to be there all the time, just like a traditional wooden house. You will sacrifice a few things; the blind will weather, you will spook more deer, and that will compromise your long range hunting. But it's probably the best option. Other than the double ladder idea.

I do not hunt the plots, but that is due to the constant pressure from guns. I will hunt them early season, and would hunt them more if I could control the hunting pressure. If you control the pressure, you have more options.
