So far this year I've spent 116 hrs in a tree. I have taken three deer so basically one deer every 38 hours hunting. Saw my first shooter yesterday. The three deer I've taken were 2 does and a spike by accident. I think that's pretty good considering I haven't planted anything. The buck was chasing a doe yesterday evening so it's about to be on

I would increase my chances of taking a big buck if I had the equipment to plant plots so the does would be in one area. When they are using natural browse, they could be anywhere and the bucks will be there with them. That's why any goober in a shooting house can kill one of they are willing to sit long enough. I'm kind of partial to bowhunting

Public land hunting mostly and natural browse. I have logged around 180 hours in a stand and killed 5 , lost 2 , missed 1. Let a lot walk this year compared to previous years. I'm by far no trophy hunter, give me a 2 1/2 year old deer and up and I'm slinging an arrow most of the time. Killing a mature doe with a bow is better than any mature buck with a gun while sitting in a shooting house, but that's just my opinion laugh and your not necessarily going to kill a 3 1/2 year old buck or older on a green field unless you spend endless hours hunting on it or have a rabbit's foot in your pocket with some prime hunting property.

JD if your wife is still as mean as she was in school I see why you spend all those hours in a stand grin jk

I was editing while you where posting. She is exactly why I hunt so much. It's fixing to be on up your way and towards Freedom hills. I have got some scouting done and can't wait to get back up there.

How do you accidentally kill a spike while bow hunting?

And you don't need food plots to kill a mature buck with a bow (or a gun); funnels are where it's at.

Uh, you don't see the spikes and shoot. At least that's what I did.

I have shot spikes meaning to and not meaning to. It can happen especially right at daylight , dark and 30 yards and beyond , but this is way off original topic. Carry on! laugh

I was thinking about it and I understand how it can happen. My first bow kill ever I shot a little spike for a doe..

Back to the topic, I would have to know what the statistics are for me. I hunt a lot and I sit as long as I can. Yesterday I sat from day light till 2. I rarely get down before 11 and I am back set up by 1. On 4 days I hunted 2 all day sits a 6 hr sit and a 4 hr sit. I saw two deer in all those hrs... If I kept up with how many hrs it takes me to see a deer and or kill one and how much money I spend on it i might quit.. lol

I usually sit till 9:30 or so. It's really been a warm December so I haven't stayed too late. If I were off this week I would sit as long as I could.

I use to be the same way. I would set till 9 or so... But then I decided to set longer and longer. I hunt public land so I try and hunt the other hunters. Yesterday I didn't see a deer until 1024 and then at 1140 I watched a buck chase does around. It is hard setting all day either when its hot or really cold. But, I have convinced myself that it is worth it. I wish That I could get off Tuesday and Wednesday, those are gonna be some good days down here.

Oh yeah, I've also missed one and lost one. Hit it high and the arrow just had fat on it. Hey JD, do you use Weaver's processing in Hartselle? Those snack sticks are delicious.

I have lost one too. 17 yard shot, broad side... Hit her far back... Guts.. Missed a coyote and a fox...
