The problem originates when a dog is allowed to roam freely. If a dog is kept confined to the owners property, there is discussion happening right now.

Folks need to man up and take responsibility. Let the dog roam, understand that you can't control the actions of another man and your dog might not come back. This happens every year. Since we are all smart enough to know that people don't make the wisest choices, the safety of a dog is in the hands of the owner.

Or you can let them roam, come on aldeer talk about whippin or killin a bunch of folks that will most likely not encounter your dog. Keeping them put up is the only way you can ensure they are safe.

I hate that someone lost their family pet but how many times does this have to happen before we figure out the pattern. Dayum.

Who says this dog didn't go after someone? This wasn't a little lap dog. Were any of you there? This may not have anything to do with deer or hunting. Doesn't every owner of a dog that attacks someone say that their dog wouldn't hurt a fly. And why is it that every story about someone that wants to whip someone's ass always end up with them handing out an ass whipping? Don't they ever get their ass whipped? I know I have seen it happen. Big difference in being mad enough to whip someone's ass and actually being able to whip said ass.

Just for the record, I'm on the non-dog shooting side of this fence. But, to clarify, the OP is from Chelsea. I'd have to ask if this happened near Chelsea. The OP stated the dog was found 50yds from the house. Shouldn't a hunting lease near an extremely populated area of the state expect these kinds of interactions? If you lease land in the fastest growing county in the state, you should probably have realistic expectations. It doesn't sound like this happened in the middle of Wilcox county where a pet dog would be totally unexpected to see.

Lease land next to a neighborhood and then get pissed when you see a neighborhood dog, that's ridiculous. Adjust your expectations to allow for the local population. If you want to be totally undisturbed, get a lease in rural Alabama. That dog could have easily been playing in the yard with the kids and chased a cat into the woods.

Once again, owners keep dogs confined to the land they have rights to use, no dogs get in harms way.

You would think people who own land neighboring a hunting club would be more cautious with their animals. Gotta address the problem, not the symptom.

I wouldn't shoot a dog crossing my hunting property, however if it continued to do so ruining my ability to hunt then that dog might wind up dead.

Dog owners need to keep their dogs on their own property!!!

Who can honestly say that their dog has never slipped out under the fence or their cable came undone, or whatever the case. Sometimes it just happens. Nobody is perfect. If you find out who the owner is and they don't correct the problem you have the pound drop off a trap and pick them up. You shoot a dog that doesn't pose a threat to someone's life, then you deserve whatever confrontation that comes with it. Should both sides be more responsible? Yes they should, but nobody is perfect. What happened to the days of people helping others out?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Yes I love dogs and I will not apologize for that once so ever. I've take plenty of brow beatings because of it. From some prominent members on this board haha! However Troy posted that it was illegal to shoot dogs that didn't pose a threat. So a dog running through your property ismt posing a threat am I correct? So we talk out of both sides of our mouths here. It's ok for us to break the law if it benefits us? Just a month ago we were all in an uproar about the Ferguson mo deal where they were looting. They were breaking the law plain and simple and so are you for shooting dogs. The law is the law whether we like it or not. Shoot a dog or ruin a hunt? I'll let it ruin my hunt. I have learned that if Jesus wants me to kill a deer...I will kill it with no scent blocker clothing with a 223 after chasing off four stray dogs. He is still on the throne and though sometimes we and myself included don't think that everything is truly made by a divine appointment. In short leave the dogs alone and know that God is in control and have faith that your hunt didn't get ruined by a dog!

I think one of the most important aspects of this topic is everytime some hunter kills someones pet especially a childs or multiple childs pet as in the ops case we have just created several new anti hunters. I really think we need to think of the long term consequences of our actions. Also I have hunted Illinois quite a bit and where I hunt most places I can see for 1/2 mile or more in several directions with several farm houses in sight, I have watched farm dogs roam all over these fields sometimes very close to deer and very seldom does it disturb the deer. I understand sometimes dogs chase deer but when they cohabit in the same area it doesn't take them long to get used to each other. Bottom line the dogs seem to bother the hunter more than the deer. I also know very well the hunters side of this because years ago I thought the dogs were ruining my hunting too so I killed one, probably 300yds behind someones house, I am sure it was their pet. To be honest a guilt set in on me and to this day I still feel terrible about it. I quess some of us just have a conscious.

Mirage, I don't have any holy water if I did I promise I would share. What I do have is faith and I will continue to share that. Killed my best buck to date earlier this month. He's going to score in the mid to low 130s. He was either 4 or 5 years old. He's been around the block a few times but for some reason he walked right beside my shooting house. I still can't explain it. All I did was squeeze the trigger. Case in point it never should have happened but I did. Did I deserve that deer? Absolutely not but I'm blessed to take it and make a memory forever!

I once had permission to hunt a creek bottom surrounded by planted pines and peanut fields. The was this house across the dirt road from the property. They had a doberman that would.come down in the woods and start barking at you. I didn't kill him but could understand how someone might. Maybe this was the same situation. I still wouldn't have shot him though
