Due to basketball he's not had many chances to hunt this year, and has been pretty upset with that. After he found out he didnt have practice Sat he asked me if there was any way we could slip off that morning and give it a try. Of course this tickled me to death and told him I would do everything I could to have him in the woods at daylight. It all worked out and we were set up at sunrise. About 6:30 we had a spike stroll thru at about 40 yards. Then about 7:30 had a couple does come thru. At 9:00 I heard something trotting on the ridge to our left and looked out the window and saw a nice 6 or 8 pt easing along the ridge. He tried to get on him, but we lost him in the brush. At 9:15 I was still looking for the buck with my binos when Mason said there's another buck. Sure enough this buck popped out on the powerline about 40 yrds out and started easing away from us. By the time he got his gun up and ready he had already made it 100 yrds out and was about to go back in the woods. I stopped him twice, but Mason couldnt get on him (nerves). The third time I stopped him I told him that this was his last chance, better do something. Well he shot and the deer bolted. I wasnt sure about the shot, but he kept telling me he felt confident about it. After a long one hour wait we got out to look and found blood right away. I looked up the hill and there he was not 15 yrds from where he was shot. Under all the pressure he had managed to make a perfect heart shot to end the hunt for his first racked buck. He was very excited about the buck, but the excitement I felt was unlike any other I have ever had as long as Ive been hunting. Sorry for the long read, but I'm still a little excited.
