Im an avid turkey hunter in Jackson County but have never attempted to deer hunt up there. With duck season sucking pretty hard Im thinking about going to the next gun hunt on the management area. My question is, what part of the mountain do deer usually hang out in this time of year? I know in the spring time I see a bunch of deer in the bottoms, but obviously things are different in April than they are in late December. Do I need to be looking on the tops? Bottom, middle, oak trees? Thick stuff?

If you have seen deer there, go in there from down wind and look for sign and set up and hunt.

Does go from bed to food to bed, rut is right around the corner, bucks will be near the does.

On a really cold , sunshine morning, they'll bed on a South facing slope. If you find a bedding area , hunt near it and not in it. Don't hunt wide open hardwoods, hunt edges and structure. Edges being where mature timber meets logged areas, cedars meet hardwoods, etc. Structure being, hog back ridges, saddles, points, knobs to name a few.

Try to hunt the wind if you can, but you'll soon find in most places it's futile. Swirls and thermals rule the mountains.
