central ala,
Yes it will grow but please don't plant that junk. It will ruin a tractor tire along with a perfectly good foot.

Deer do like the pods. You will regret it later though. Invasive species and the thorns are brutal.

I'd plant Keiffer pears, much less care needed than apples. Also add chestnuts and Jap. Persimmons.

I don't recommend the Jap persimmons. I planted 3 last spring and they have already produced persimmons. The only problem, is that they don't drop off the tree. They hang. Only climbing critters can get the fruit, when they get bigger. Mine were literally getting rotten on the limb and they were still hard to pull loose.

I've looked at these before. Isnt there a "thornless" honey locust also? I can't remember if there is or not, or if it makes the same attractive pods, but it's still invasive and that's what turned me off of them.

I'd suggest some pears or crabapples instead.

They were abundant at our place until the landowner leased the land out to a farming operation and they bulldozed every single one of them down. Deer loved them. Have videos of deer standing on their hind legs stretching to eat the pods. My Dad dug up a few small ones and planted them in south Georgia and they are now producing pods after just 5 years.

I just got back from Pike County, Ill., and never have seen more honey locusts growing around there in my life. Every pod on the ground was mangled. Several small trees, like 4-6 footers or so, were ripped to shreds as rubbing posts. I guess the bigger ones have the spines on the lower trunks and aren't comfortable.
