Yeah it's gonna be a trade off between noise and performance. Your velocity has to be low to be sub sonic.

I have not shot the Savage. I have shot a Ruger in 243Win, with sub sonic ammo it sounded like a 22cb cap shell. The bullet impact made a LOT of noise.

This ^ Had a chance to shoot a suppressed .308 and was loaded with a 220 grain RN bullet. Very quiet but could definitely hear the thwack on the other end.

With all subsonic rounds, power is derived from bullet weight since the velocity is essentially equal (around 1050 fps to stabilize). A 220gr 308 is ideidentical to a 220gr 300BLK.
Even a 308 supersonic is quiet when suppressed. Sounds about like a supersonic 22lr with a little more if a WOOSH sound mixed in with the report. Buddy shot a doe about 500 yards from me with a supersonic suppressed 308 a few weeks back. I never heard it.

I've used a AR-10 300 blackout with a Dixie Arms suppressor with subsonic ammo and honestly I wasn't that impressed. It WAS quiet but not movie quiet. More like a subsonic 22. Now I've used a 22lr with a bolt action that was pellet rifle quiet. But with any suppressor if it's not subsonic round it's loud, suppressor or not.

A well built 22 lr does not require a subsonic round. Most commercial junk does Huh, so a high end suppressor can rearrange physics and make an object surpassing the speed of sound not make a sonic boom? You must know something about physics I have never heard of. Now maybe your thinking that a good suppressor put on a PISTOL will be very effective in reducing the report from any velocity ammo. That's because pistol barrels aren't long enough to get the round up to full velocity.

My brother and I are tossing around the idea getting a trust on some suppressors for our rifles. I have to admit I'm a little confused on how this all works. Based on the previous post, I'm not going to be able to put a suppressor on a 270, shoot normal velocity ammo and expect ANY difference with the noise? Not sure if they even make sub sonic 270's because they are so fast. I guess the question is does it make any difference at all, sound wise, putting a suppressor on a high velocity rifle and shooting normal velocity rounds? Also lets say I find some sub sonic rounds for anything, how much velocity and energy do I lose? Not that I would ever take one but would I still be able to do major damage on an animal at 400-800yds?

They are still worth buying. If you want as close to Hollywood quiet as possible you will need either a 300blk or .308 to shoot heavy sub sonics. The 270 will shoot subsonics but your energy shooting subsonic comes from bullet weight since your velocity is limited to around 1050fps. With a 308/300 you can shoot up to a 240gr and have it stabilize. With a 270 it's hard to get over 150gr. Beauty of it is if you buy a 30 cal can you can shoot it on anything smaller including your 270.

No, what I am saing is in a 22 rifle or a pistol a well built suppressor with properly spaced gas ports, you won't need subsonic ammo. It can be built to shoot standard ammo with subsonic results. I may or may not know something that you don't, but I know way more than the above average bear on the subject. Then how come I can slip a hi velocity rd into my magazine and go from pellet gun quiet to loud report back to pellet gun? A silencer can't muffle a sonic boom. I don't care if it's a thousand dollar 22 The problem with info on suppressors is most people that don't even own one think they know about them. I have 2, and in just waiting for the stamp to come in on them. I did a trust on mine. They are very easy to do.

Beauty of it is if you buy a 30 cal can you can shoot it on anything smaller including your 270. So the way to go would be to get a 30cal suppressor so that I have the option to put it on dang near any hunting rifle or a 223? Do you lose anything putting a bigger bore suppressor on a smaller caliber? Just doing the physics in my head, I would think that a 30cal suppressor threaded on a 223 would allow some of the gasses controled by the suppressor to escape past the suppressor itself? I'm asking this because I do have a 30 caliber rifle but thats not what I intended to install it on. But I may change my mind in the future and wouldnt have to do anything but thread the barrel. Obviously I know very little about these things.
