Good for him. I bet the owners of the high fence place are pissed. Yep, I bet we haven't heard the last of this story. The owners cant do shucks, they're SOL!
So weird.

I'm failing to understand some, most, of ya'll about this deer. Ya'll damn high fence hunting till the cows come home, then turn around and applaud killing that same deer just because it is outside the fence. It's the same defenseless, dumb as a rock buck that was in the fence a short time ago.....but now it is a GREAT kill!!!! Just like shooting a cow. Ya'll would kill a mans cow that got out????
Everyone around there, including the hunter, knew it was an escapee from a mans high fence deer farm. A deer that that man had invested a lot of time, effort, and money in raising. And yet everybody says screw him, he shouldn't of let it escape.
There's some twisted thinking going on.....

There's some twisted thinking going on..... I doubt the state DNR wanted that deer exposed to the free ranging herd to begin with. I don't blame the kid. Maybe he could have caught him and tied him to a tree until someone could come recover him

There's some twisted thinking going on..... Agreed...which is why I say this story isn't over.

Fred,
I see now the angle you are looking at this from although I had not thought of it before you posted.
I was just thinking that this is a 17 year old kid, who got to kill an enormous buck that otherwise he probably would have never had the chance to kill.
Sure, it was an escaped deer. Sure, he knew it. But I still have to believe it was a thrill of a lifetime for him to take such a deer. Was it a dumb, stupid, tame deer? Probably, but I'd bet that kid was still proud to have shot it.
How would it have ever been caught and returned to the owner? We don't even know from the story if the owner was making a good effort to recover it although he may have been.
I hate it for the owner but am happy for the kid. Sort of a bittersweet story line here.
I think some of the responses people have made on this thread comes from their extreme dislike of high fence owners and the deer farmers. They are glad for a misfortune that came to one of these people.
I do clearly see your point now though.
