Answers are gonna be pretty area specific, since most are only familiar with the gw's that are where they live and where they hunt.
That said, Clem Parnell in Baldwin County would get my vote. The man does his job.

Clem Parnell is a good one. Wesley Knapp another. Richard Adkins another. Richard Reed and Chester Pugh, both started in Sumpter Co. Capt.Chris Lewis. a damn good young Captain.

I was arrested for pulling out of my driveway for spotlighting because my headlights shined on my neighbors yard. Then since I had a cc with permit told me I was also under arrest for night hunting by MJ.So maybey its just me.

Gordon Bennett, dang good un from Dale Co Gordon died of cancer back in the summer. Met him a few times at a gun shop, and once at a hunting club he belonged to. Seemed like a good guy and was well respected by all who knew him. Wesley Knapp retired last year. I am friends with his partner from that county.

Good one is Gordon from Pickens Co. Worst piece of crap ever is Mark Jolly. Not sure where he is now. Last I knew, Mark was in Russell county. Duck hunted with him some about 10-11 years ago. First time we went together, we got the dekes out and was waiting for legal light when he asked to see my license and stamps. I showed him, and he said, "okay, we can hunt now".

I dont know him but I am surprised he didnt try to write himself and you up for participating in hunting activities before shooting light. I have been told by a warden that I cant take someone along squirrel hunting even if they didn't handle the gun or dogs. He probably didnt know what he was talking about.

I thought Richard Reed started out in Barbour County. I know he was over there and was young in the early 80's. Richard started in Sumpter Co, sometime before 1980 when I started. Prolly in the mid 70's.

Clem Parnell gets my vote, but that's only because Troy is retired and I've never had the opportunity to personally meet him. I know guys that have been ticketed by Clem and 3 nights later, call him on his cell phone at 3:00 AM on his off night for a tow home and he'd happily oblige. That's not why he gets my vote, just an example of how he's thought of around here. He'd write his on dad a ticket, but he'd also walk through Hades with you if you needed a hand. I'm not sure if he's retired yet or not, but 2 yrs ago he was still at it and said he was about done, but he's been saying that for 10 years. I swear if Clem, Troy, and another one or two Alabama GW's would get together and write a book, it'd probably be a #1 seller in the outdoors category.

I will have to agree that Jimmy Jones, is one of the best outdoorsmen there is . He could sneak up behind you in the middle of a 40 acre open field. I encountered him a few times when I was younger and he was friendly but professional . Jimmy could run as fast and as long as any Lawman I know. From my recollection he only stopped to catch his breath once in a short hilly marathon he and I ran one time. Another GW that falls into the great outdoorsman mold is Joe Carroll . I think he is still working Henry county. Richard Reed, is also a good guy that did his job with a high degree of professionalism . The South East corner of Alabama has a lot of very good Game and Fish officers.

My arrest from Mark Jolly was in 1995 when he was first starting out.He was very unproffessionsl, used no common sense, and cost me a lot of money in lawyers fees.(case was thrown out by judge). So you will have to forgive me if I have a different perspective. He also told several lies in court.I`m sure hes a great guy.

My vote is for B'ham Fred (Troy) since he is the only one I've met. Actually, I got checked last year by a GW in Shelby Co., don't know his name, but he was very polite, friendly and had a good sense of humor. He walked in on me and my son and asked if we had permission to hunt the land we were on. I looked at him and said, "Which one of us parked on the other side of that locked gate and had to walk in?" He laughed and said, "You've got a pretty good point there." I offered to show him my license to which he said it wasn't necessary. We shot the bull for a few minutes then he wished us luck, said don't hesitate to call if we ever need him and was on his way.

Gordon Bennett was definitely a legend around here. I always admired his ability to aggressively do his job but still gain the respect of everyone he dealt with. Heck, even the rogue dog hunters he constantly chased around seemed to respect him.
Grady Jackson in Pike County was another good one.

Four pages and not one mention of Leon McKamey. I've been waiting on one of you Etowah County boys to chime in... Bunch of dang outlaws Heck, that 31 county tag is known all over the country and I am not joking. I know several guys in other states that recognize it. You boys are known as some killing fools.

Met Brad Simpson from Mobile County a few months ago. Really nice guy. Hope he is doing the county some good. I have talked to him a few times and he came on our club to help look for a crippled up bear. Seems like a good guy, very professional and returns calls quickly.

Jerry Jinright of the Pike County area is probably one of the longest tenured game warden in the state. I think he has close to 45 years in and is still working. I have a funny story about that guy. Back in the late 70's when I was a little feller (6 years old), we went and visited my dads cousin in Montgomery one fall weekend. My mom and me and my sister stayed with the cousins wife and kids all weekend. My dad and his cousin Ken were going to go build some stands and do some work at a little hunting club they were in. My grandpa came along because while they were working he wanted to shoot a few squirrels. At some point during the morning a big ol doe wandered by my grandpa and he shot the dang thing and killed it with his .22. My dad was none to pleased and after a lengthly tracking job they found the deer. They threw that thing in back of Ken's Bronco and hauled tail back to Montgomery. They pulled in the yard and unloaded that thing and was trying to get it gutted and quartered. It was cool to me because at 6 years old seeing a deer was a big deal to me, so I am sure I was all in the way. Well...... one of the neighbors called the Game Warden because they saw them skinning a deer out and it wasn't season. Actually it was bow season but they didn't know that. So about half way through the skinning/quartering job, Mr. Jinright pulls in the driveway and gets out of his truck. He came back in the back yard and started checking licenses. He asked how the deer was killed and my grandpa told him it was shot with a bow. He looked at him with his head cocked to the side and said "That don't look like no arrow hole". He started prodding deeper. My grandpa (who passed in 94) insisted he shot the deer with a field point. After much talking Mr. Jinright left. About 10 minutes later he came back clearly agitated and started talking about "Throwing some asses in jail if I don't get the correct story". He stomped around and yelled some more and then picked the hide up and said he was going to take it to some lab and have it examined for gunpowder residue, unless my grandpa wanted to tell him what happened. They told him to go ahead. He loaded up the hide and left. About 10 minutes went by and he pulled back in the driveway looking crazy and got out of his truck. He stormed into the back yard and threw that deer hide at my granddads feet and said "The best thing you two (talking to my dad and grandpa) sonofabi***es can do is get in that truck and take your arses back to Jefferson Co and don't let me ever catch you in Montgomery Co again! Then he stormed off and that's the last we saw of him. In my six years I had never seen a man get that red faced and mad.

Wasn't a creek in the Wiregrass he ain't been in! Great man!! And everyone knows ole Richard Reed (Chief O Cheapie)was so professional, he would write his own Momma a ticket!!LOL!!

If you are talking about Adkins in Monroe County, he was really good and did his job well. Both guys here in Marengo County are good. They are always happy to answer your questions, and are hard workers. I have never heard anyone say they are dishonest either.

Cliff miller was a good one. He walked like 5 miles one day to check my dad and uncle for an "electronic call" during turkey season. He looked all though the trucks then my day pulled out an old be lee mouth call and did a fly down cackle. Cliff just hung his head. Dad gave him a ride out.

Good one is Gordon from Pickens Co. Worst piece of crap ever is Mark Jolly. Not sure where he is now. Yep Gordon Gordon the game warden as he is known. Good and fair, never had a problem with him when I hunted south of Aliceville.

If I'm not mistaken, Jimmy played football for Auburn and still holds some kind of record there. He could flat out fly back in the day. Joey Carroll and his partner Larry Doster are both good men and are both originally from Dale county. We are very fortunate to have the quality wardens we have in our area.

Jimmy Jones was a field goal kicker for Auburn and held points record. He used to carry a college football card of him in his GW truck over the visor. He was a nice and funny guy (pretty good taxidermist too) I haven't seen him in 6 or 7 years. He owned Rattlers Taxidermy in ozark. He told me one time "I know that I mount some deer that was killed illegal and people think it's funny. That's ok though, they can pay me now and pay me later when i catch them". Yep, I've heard that story myself!! LOL!! Jimmy was great to sit back and hear the stories...

Thad Holmes really rubbed me the wrong way. A buddy and I had shot a limit of ducks, and had met at a gas station that morning before the hunt to put his gear in my truck and boat. Well Thad sees us unloading my buddies stuff and putting it into his truck. He comes over and is fairly polite to begin with. He asks how we did, and I show him the birds.
He then proceeds to tell us that we have shot to many of a certain species. I told him we had not. He then proceeds to argue with my buddy and I over the ID of the birds (getting more and more rude as this situation goes on). I had to go into my truck, get own duck ID book and show him how to identify the birds. He had no idea what he was looking at, it was obvious, yet he still wanted to argue. He finally agreed with us, reluctantly, and went on about his business.
It just bothers me that a Game Warden would go out of his way to harass hunters, when he obviously has no idea what he is even looking at. If ducks werent his expertise, thats fine, but dont come give me a hard time for no reason.
I never mind being checked, but basically being called a criminal, when i've done nothing wrong will piss me off every time.
Turkeys be damned.

Richard Knox in Pickens was another good one. I heard he wrote is son up for no license.
He was straighter than an arrow. Good man. One afternoon he had backed into an old dim road to watch for road hunters. He had a dummy deer setup in the edge of a clear cut. My father-in-law shot it twice from his climber that was before he realized what it was. He and Richard had a laugh from that. Richard lived just down the road and they even went to the same church.
(FIL was legal, He was on his land and deer was far enough from the road. If Richard had put it a little closer I am sure he would have written my FIL up for shooting too close to a road. I think dummy deer was 75 yards away from the road)

I was trying to think of Robert Hills name earlier, one tough BIG man that spoke what he was thinking without a PC thought about it.

Robert Hill...I stopped to help some fellows with what I thought was a front flat tire. Robert drives up grabs me by the ear and says what are you doing with these thugs...get the heck outta here. he busted them for trespassing, doe deer out of season, no orange, no license, etc. Mack Lawliss...at Big Daddy's bait shop I asked why you buying so many beanie weanies and viennas...said got business to do...I asked how long you staying and his answer was long as it takes! Man grabs me by the ear, he fixin to get clocked. Robert Hill is a FINE fellow and you can believe he had the VERY best intentions in his actions!!! He was the kind of man that really cared about folks and did not want to see kids make mistakes that will follow them their entire lives! That said.....he was also a BIG man, and much of one, in his day! LOL He still lives right down the road from me. He and my Dad went to School and played ball together. They are still friends and talk regular today. My Dad got ONE phone call from Robert about some of my 'extra-curricular' activities while I was in High School.....ONE! My Dad knew that Robert was serious and let me know in no uncertain terms that he was too!

I'd wager Robert Hill was one of the very best GWs ever to work in Alabama.

Second day of gun season in 2010 got out of bed when nobody else would and killed my deer of a lifetime in Dallas County 220 pound 10-point. Been hunting 40 years and finally got a nice one. Headed home excited as could be stopped in Thomasville to use the bathroom and get a drink. The lady at the gas station saw the deer and asked me about it. I was telling her the story, I was so excited as a tall black guy stands there listening. She asks if she can see it so we go to my truck. I am on cloud 9. The black guy follows us out. The lady and I talk for a few more minutes and she walks off. That is when he says "Ok its my turn". He flashes a badge from under his coat that is on his belt. I thought I'm legal; then I remembered I didn't fill out the back of my license. My excitement is shattered. I hand him my license and tell him I forgot. He tells me the only chance I have is if I have got a pen in my truck to fill it out; if not I'm getting a ticket. I turned from disappointment to anger. He saw how excited I was and I felt he was just trying to ruin my day. I knew I had a pen but at this point I told him sir just do whatever you need to do. Anyway he handed me his pen and I filled it out and went on my way. I was wrong I know but he didn't have to be that way either.

X3. He's a keeper for sure. Fine man.

Not sure what county he is in now but I knew Brad Gavins before he was a GW. He's a great bow hunter and a big time rattlesnake catcher. JEFF BRAD IS IN CRENSHAW COUNTY NOW, I SURE DID HATE TO SEE HIM LEAVE SHELBY COUNTY BUT THAT IS WHERE HE WAS BORN AND RAISED. HE IS A DAMN FINE FELLA, HE AND I USED TO GO NOODLING MANY TIMES DURING THE SUMMERS AND HE EVEN HAD ME TO HIS HOUSE FOR DINNER A FEW TIMES.

Maybe this guy was the best...
A hillbilly went hunting one day in West Virginia and bagged three ducks. He put them in the bed of his pickup truck and was about to drive home where he was confronted by an ornery game warden who didn’t like hillbillies. The game warden ordered to the hillbilly to show his hunting license, and the hillbilly pulled out a valid West Virginia hunting license. The game warden looked at the license, then reached over and picked up one of the ducks, sniffed its butt, and said, “This duck ain’t from West Virginia . This is a Kentucky duck. You got a Kentuckey huntin’ license, boy?” The hillbilly reached into his wallet and produced a Kentucky hunting license. The game warden looked at it, then reached over and grabbed the second duck, sniffed its butt, and said, “This ain’t no Kentucky duck. This duck’s from Tennessee. You got an Tennessee license?” The hillbilly reached into his wallet and produced an Tennessee license. The warden then reached over and picked up the third duck, sniffed its butt, and said This ain’t no Tennessee duck. This here duck’s from Virginia. . You got a Virginia. huntin’ license?” Again the hillbilly reached into his wallet and brought out a Virginia. hunting license. The game warden was extremely frustrated at this point, and he yelled at the hillbilly “Just where the hell are you from? “The hillbilly turned around, bent over, dropped his pants, and said “You tell me, you’re the expert!!”

My vote goes to Clem Parnell. He stopped us gator hunting a few years back. Checked what he needed to. Was polite. One of the guys with us had forgotten his billfold so therefore didn't have has hunting license. Clem raised his flashlight just a little and said "well, considering I have checked this young man at least 3 times this gator season alone, I think I am ok with the excuse of him leaving his billfold back at the camp"...and that was it.
Another thing he did that gets him a vote is that we were on a big one that kept going down on us in a little backwater slough. One way in, one way out. We had to sit on him for a couple of hours. We saw a boat off in the distance, between us and the exit. I feel certain that they could tell what was going on, with us going from big lights to little lights over and over. Rather than come check us then and screw us up, they kept their distance until we got finished...and then came and checked us
That right there is a civil servant that is respectful of the people that he serves....wasn't a hint of unpleasantness, arrogance, or anything like that in him.
Carrying a gun isn't comfortable; but at times it is comforting

It was plumb stupid Hogwild how many he ticketed on that green grass. Here's a story relayed to me by some folks on an offshore trip about Kelley's Flat. They had a driver and 3-4 guys standing in the back with buckshot trying to kill that same muy grande all the locals were after. After several passes down to the store and back the driver finally sees him and gives the knock on the window that there he is. They stand up too soon...the buck walks out onto the road and stops...driver yelling shoot...shoot...shoot!!!They can't because they can't see for the tears rolling down their face from looking into the cold wind!!! Deer runs off. They pull back into their drive at the camper and Robert pulls right up behind them lights off and gets out and grills them...then gives them tickets for loaded guns on the highway. Then they swear he says...good thing you kids stood up too soon and got blinded by tears or you would all be in jail now!!! How long did you follow us? And in a typical Robert face said... JUST LONG ENOUGH!

then gives them tickets for loaded guns on the highway. This is against the law? not as stated. No such loaded gun in a vehicle or or on a highway. Unless it was for hunting from a highway or hunting from a motor vehicle. Clem, FYI, a LOT of city popo think it is against the law to have a loaded long gun in a vehicle. My youngest brother dang near went to jail in Bham for having an UNLOADED shotgun, in a case, in his truck. Dumbass Bham cops said he was under arrest for "having a gun"...period. If I hadn't been there he would of gone to jail.

JUST LONG ENOUGH! Dang shame that deer got killed...... Robert hauled those antlers around a while. Not sure what he did with them?? A guy that was in my grade in school got to seeing 2 BIG bucks here by the house.....he started riding through at night a LOT. He pulled up one night at Johnny Bagley's pasture, turned in and eased up the little road by the field......turned his light on....and there they were!! He eased the rifle out, got em in the scope and eased the Safety off.....about the time the Safety clicked, Roberts big hand grabbed the barrel and shoved it down and said. "Don't do it. I've seen enough!" He almost crapped his pants! Robert had stepped on back of his truck as he went through the rough ditch into the old road without him knowing it!!!! LMAO He was a good warden and a great guy!!!

If they were given a citation for "loaded guns on the highway" then that's BS, and BS if they signed and accepted that.
Jeepers.
I guess if you rode around with a gun rack in the pickup and rifle, you'd be surrounded by cops with guns drawn. What a damned society we live in now.

We were stopped on the side of highway 72 , glassing for a pig when a State Trooper pulled up. He walked to the car and saw 2 rifles , made us get out and he got the rifles out and started jackin' bullets out. Well he went nuts, said he was going to arrest us. I told him it was perfectly legal and at the time could shoot from the road. I convinced him to radio the sheriff and have them radio the GW. Well I guess we know how it turned out, one mad Trooper named Luther Joe Prichett.
