Yesterday was my draw hunt here in MS. It was the only day I could get out and I knew the deer were beginning to chase up there. Me and my wife was gonna go up and call it a date. Well when my son found out he wasn't taking no for an answer. So the 3 found us traveling up to the area 4 hrs away. I had a spot I knew we would see deer. It is 3/4 mile from parking, and so it took awhile to get 4 y/o and all gear down to spot. I scouted this spot back in october and knew there was 2 big cut down cedar limbs on the fence line. We got in at 515 and just popped chairs up in the cedar limbs. It was actually perfect cover to hide 3 bodies. I wanted my son to kill but it was such a great distance for his crossbow. We were looking down a 300 yd lane between 2 thickets, and a creek bottom. Behind us was cedar thicket. Right and left the 2 other big open lanes. All made up a clover field that did not come up. Right at daybreak I see a doe feed across far end of lane, and about minute later see a buck nose down walking across. I put scope on him but just did not have time to get a good look. About 5 minutes later another deer runs across. I break out the grunt and can call and begin calling. 3 different calling sequences and 30 min later I look up to see a buck step out mid ways in the lane and walking right to us. He kept looking for the doe and did not see her. At this point I had a flood of thoughts going on. Is he big enough (15" min) and should I let my son try and shoot him with 270. Remembering he is 4 and only shot a 7mm-08, I opted to just ease him on my lap to get a better look. I had the deer in scopes and with the setting and circumstances I could not pass him. It was hazy fog in the background, sun just coming up, camera rolling and oh yeah my son saying daddy I want you to Kill him. Just before he was turning to go back I stopped him and dropped him. It was a mixed emotion feeling, because I knew if he was short it would be a ticket and no deer and an tough explanation to my son. He ended up being 15" on the money, I mean right there. 162 pounds and a 3 y/o. I normally would of passed him especially here, but we only had 1 day to get it done and my son loves deer meat. He helped clean the deer, game warden actually drove us down on the rhino and got the deer and helped us clean him. It was one of those days you know God had created it start to finish. Just never know when something like this happens again. My wife does not hunt but agreed to go as a date., and my son goes everywhere that hunting is involved. For all of us to be on the ground, on a new spot, filming, and to call a deer in and kill it. It is just a Glorious, Grace filled day. Now it is time to strictly focus on my son and his quest to get his first kill with his crossbow. We are filming a DVD and set a goal for a buck, doe, hog, and turkey all crossbow all him! Its proving to be tough so far.
