I am new to hunting at Wheeler, and I have never hunted any swamp lands before. I've just been hunting the hardwoods outside of the swamps. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how or where to hunt swamps. Thanks!

Bring a compass and a map, that's all I know.

Look for any edges/transitions in timber. Think through potential dry(ish) bedding locations and food sources/doe sources. Also think through water depth although I've seen deer swim deep areas of swamps like it was nothing on really cold mornings. Add all that data up to coming up with a plan A, B, C, D etc for possible deer travel routes. Hunt those sites based off wind.

That's all I know. My problem is I get the wind wrong cause it seems to swirl in swamp bottoms. So, I would add to make a reasonable attempt at scent control and not over hunting your best sites.

Also: buy hip waders and use a walking stick. You can't afford to fall and get wet on really cold mornings a long way from the truck.

Also: they will bed on high areas where they can hear you coming. Walk as quite as you can and keep your rifle ready and set on the lowest power when traveling to and from your stand.

According to Colbert, you just need to strip down naked and rub mud all over you.

Done that twice, no success. Just a lot of pain getting that dried mud off..

Swamps are no different than any other terrain feature. You've got to hunt the hottest sign. I hunt flat bottomland. I don't worry too much about wind direction because the deer can and do come from all directions.

Used to hunt swamps on public ground a lot! Lots of fun & lots of deer. Just like deer everywhere, they will take the path of least resistance. I had decent luck hunting beaver dams that deer used to cross water. Because of the soft ground, the trails are easy to find. Climb a tree near a hot trail & wait.
