And was not impressed by the ribs at all. Big, tough spare ribs which were cooked too fast. Slaw was just OK. It's got that "hole in the wall" atmosphere but the food was not that good.

I was craving ribs today, and thought about dreamland as we went over the bridge.
Glad to learn of them cooking them that way, as I'd hate to waste the money, as there are other places to go.

That's where I wanted to go but was told they were closed today. I won't ever go back to Dreamland.

Dreamland hasn't been worth a crap since Big Daddy Bishop died. You should have tried the original Archibald's In Northport.

Dreamland hasn't been worth a crap since Big Daddy Bishop died. You should have tried the original Archibald's In Northport. That place was awesome! In the old crack house looking place! Their ribs and sauce is only what dreamland could dream of producing.
This is Aldeer! The place people come to vent their frustrations and completely change their stance a few minutes later...

Dreamland is more overrated than Dan Mullen and stuffed crust pizza. You want good BBQ??? Take hwy 13 north out of Tuscaloosa, hang a left on hwy 78, take that about 3 hrs until you get to Memphis.
My personal favorites are Interstate, Germantown Commissary, Rendezvous and Central BBQ. But really just about any Memphis BBQ is going to dominate anything found in AL.

But seriously though, Dreamland is garbage. Lot of better places in the Tuscaloosa area.

But when they're "on their game" (which is about 75% of the time in my personal experience) their ribs are the best in the world. Hands down. When they're off their game their ribs are still really dang good. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night there'll be a wait BUT its worth it.

Dreamland used to be really cool before they built on to it and Mr. Bishop was still living.
They had the potbellied stove going in the wintertime and colorful signs on the walls.
I liked how the ran the checkout system--"what'd y'all have, slab and a half, six Buds?.......7 dollars apiece."
On weekend nights they closed at 9:00 to the general public and opened up to the neighborhood crowd only.
Good times.
PS: I still think their sauce is better than Archibald's.

They must have been "off their game" all of the dozen or more times I've been there. Been disappointed every time, to be honest. But, it's "world famous", and when clients came in from out of town and that's where they want to eat, that's where I'd take them. Some loved it...others felt like me and weren't all that impressed.

I may get flamed by some of you real BBQ official folks but I had ribs at Sante Fe a few weeks ago and they were really good. I doubt they are cooked on site, probably frozen and heated up at the restaurant but they were good.

If I'm in Memphis, I make sure of several things, two of them that apply here is that I ain't hungry and have have plenty of gas so I can get the heck out of there. Lived in Birmingham 5 years, and Memphis 3 years. If I had to move back to one of them, I'd pick Memphis every day, and twice on Sunday.

And it seems to have a lot more "personality" than Bham, if that makes any sense. As far as crime, really no different than any other major city. There's good parts and bad parts. I grew up in Memphis and honestly never dealt like I was truly in any danger. Even in what most people consider bad parts of town.

As far as sauce - I have fallen in love with Hancocks in Selma across from the old Walter Craigs. Their meat is bland but their sauce is tomato based, warm and tangy not sweet and runny. Its my favorite. I have 3 pints left. Try it- its different and really good.

I was working in Wilmington, NC years ago and ate at Sticky Fingers. I got their rib sampler plate. That place was awesome.

Sticky Fingers sauce is good. Dreamland sauce is good. Central BBQ in Memphis is good.
I may get flamed for this, but Corky's in Memphis has always been good every time I have eaten there. If I'm in town for business, I am eating there...
I know that I am truly blessed in this regard, but can't nobody get anywhere in the same hemisphere BBQ wise (or hell cooking wise in general) as my Daddy. Period. Effing. Dot.

In south Bama Hook's barbeque in Troy is dang good. The Opp and Luverne locations aren't nearly as good. I ate at Hook's in Troy this past Tuesday.

Best BBQ I've ever had was a Jazzy's in Tampa, FL. That was some good stuff!!
I've never understood the love for Dreamland's. Plain nasty and their ribs are like eating a tire. Love me some Jim n Nicks though.

And was not impressed by the ribs at all. Big, tough spare ribs which were cooked too fast. Slaw was just OK. It's got that "hole in the wall" atmosphere but the food was not that good. it sucks and only is popular because bear ate there. If he ate iams cat food that would be the most popular thing to eat in Alabama. Full moon is better, jim n nicks is bettter too

As far as sauce - I have fallen in love with Hancocks in Selma across from the old Walter Craigs. Their meat is bland but their sauce is tomato based, warm and tangy not sweet and runny. Its my favorite. I have 3 pints left. Try it- its different and really good. I always like Lannie's sauce and bbq if I was in Selma. Haven't been there in years...don't know if it's still as good or not. Still open. Had it yesterday with pork skin on top. Its got to be from the original Lannies. Take out BBQ by the pound is good at Lannies #2 but everything else is kinda greasy. You just about need a police escort to get to the original but it's always worth it.

Opened a location here in the Shoals several years ago and we went to try them out. I could not even chew the ribs I was brought. We left and didn't go back. Dreamland closed less than a year later and is all but forgotten. It was the nearest nothing I have ever seen.
I can't stand a thief.

I will bet that Dreamland pre cooks the ribs, then either refrigerates or freezes them then when you order they pop them back on the grill to heat them back up.

I ate there twice and despised it both times.I only ate there a second time because I was with a crowd and was outvoted.Best ribs I ever ate were at "OH So Good" in Oneonta.Second best is the baby backs that they cook in the deli at Albertville foodland. They smoke them on low heat for about 8 hours with byrons butt rub.

I will bet that Dreamland pre cooks the ribs, then either refrigerates or freezes them then when you order they pop them back on the grill to heat them back up. Actually at the original place they don't, they open 'em up outa the plastic and slap them on the grill, direct heat. You can watch them cook right there. If they took a little more care they would taste a lot better, but before the game they sell them faster than they can cook 'em so it doesn't matter. I like the sauce, but I suspect they changed it somehow because now it will give me heartburn later, never had that happen until 4-5 years ago.

Robertson's in Ralph and Sam's Smokehouse in Fayette ain't too shabby either. 100% best places near Tuscaloosa! South or North! No doubt Sam's has the best ribs I've ever eaten. And I love their yellow sauce. Been eating there for over 20 years.
