Dreamland used to be really cool before they built on to it and Mr. Bishop was still living.
They had the potbellied stove going in the wintertime and colorful signs on the walls.
I liked how the ran the checkout system--"what'd y'all have, slab and a half, six Buds?.......7 dollars apiece."
On weekend nights they closed at 9:00 to the general public and opened up to the neighborhood crowd only.
Good times.
PS: I still think their sauce is better than Archibald's.

Dreamland is more overrated than Dan Mullen and stuffed crust pizza. You want good BBQ??? Take hwy 13 north out of Tuscaloosa, hang a left on hwy 78, take that about 3 hrs until you get to Memphis.
My personal favorites are Interstate, Germantown Commissary, Rendezvous and Central BBQ. But really just about any Memphis BBQ is going to dominate anything found in AL.

A BBQ Snob from Memphis Lived in Memphis 3 years and my wife is from there. Interstate, GC, and Central are all very good, but Rendezvous is extremely overrated as well. Huge tourist trap. The Commissary is by far my favorite. Rendezvous is a tourist trap. I'll give you that. But when they're "on their game" (which is about 75% of the time) their ribs are the best in the world. Hands down. When they're off their game their ribs are still really dang good. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night there'll be a wait BUT its worth it. They must have been "off their game" all of the dozen or more times I've been there. Been disappointed every time, to be honest. But, it's "world famous", and when clients came in from out of town and that's where they want to eat, that's where I'd take them. Some loved it...others felt like me and weren't all that impressed.

I may get flamed by some of you real BBQ official folks but I had ribs at Sante Fe a few weeks ago and they were really good. I doubt they are cooked on site, probably frozen and heated up at the restaurant but they were good.

If I'm in Memphis, I make sure of several things, two of them that apply here is that I ain't hungry and have have plenty of gas so I can get the heck out of there. Lived in Birmingham 5 years, and Memphis 3 years. If I had to move back to one of them, I'd pick Memphis every day, and twice on Sunday.

And it seems to have a lot more "personality" than Bham, if that makes any sense. As far as crime, really no different than any other major city. There's good parts and bad parts. I grew up in Memphis and honestly never dealt like I was truly in any danger. Even in what most people consider bad parts of town.

As far as sauce - I have fallen in love with Hancocks in Selma across from the old Walter Craigs. Their meat is bland but their sauce is tomato based, warm and tangy not sweet and runny. Its my favorite. I have 3 pints left. Try it- its different and really good.

I was working in Wilmington, NC years ago and ate at Sticky Fingers. I got their rib sampler plate. That place was awesome.

Sticky Fingers sauce is good. Dreamland sauce is good. Central BBQ in Memphis is good.
I may get flamed for this, but Corky's in Memphis has always been good every time I have eaten there. If I'm in town for business, I am eating there...
I know that I am truly blessed in this regard, but can't nobody get anywhere in the same hemisphere BBQ wise (or hell cooking wise in general) as my Daddy. Period. Effing. Dot.

In south Bama Hook's barbeque in Troy is dang good. The Opp and Luverne locations aren't nearly as good. I ate at Hook's in Troy this past Tuesday.

Best BBQ I've ever had was a Jazzy's in Tampa, FL. That was some good stuff!!
I've never understood the love for Dreamland's. Plain nasty and their ribs are like eating a tire. Love me some Jim n Nicks though.

And was not impressed by the ribs at all. Big, tough spare ribs which were cooked too fast. Slaw was just OK. It's got that "hole in the wall" atmosphere but the food was not that good.
it sucks and only is popular because bear ate there. If he ate iams cat food that would be the most popular thing to eat in Alabama. Full moon is better, jim n nicks is bettter too
