Our young guns planted our plots in September. We have had 1/2 inch of rain since then. We have pretty good germination and the plants look like they will make it if it rains pretty soon. Some of the plots are planted in red clay.
Well we have been told to go in at the end of Nov. or 1st of December and put out ammonium nitrate on them.
I don't think the fertilizer has had a chance to do anything yet and we need to wait until a couple of good rains before we do it.
What say?

usually once your plants get up about 5 to 6 inches, with proper rain its like the 5 or 6 week mark you can go in and add nitrogen and they will green up and make a good jump in growth

I've been told not to put out nitrogen late in the year, it was a waste. I planted mine the middle of Sept., and they look great.

I always put fert down before seed, maybe a week. I planted in September in prairy clay and all looks well. Rape, clover and wheat all look good. Tried nitrogen in December didn't see any effect. I think it may be a waste.

It be's that way sometimes.

I always hit ours with AN over the Christmas holidays. When the rut kicks in our plots are thick and green. It is never to late to hit them with AN. They will green up instantly if you time it before a rain.

Just to make sure I'm understanding the question correctly......Were the fields fertilized at planting time already? If so, with what fert and how much?

Fertilized at planting time. Not sure about the mixture the boys put out. I believe they were going on a suggestion from a fert. company based on the soil samples from AU. Probably would have averaged closed to trip. 13, more or less. Don't know what the amt. was, but probably close to 150#/acre. I'll find out and PM you. Thanks

I have fertilized a plot next to some "jungle areas" in the past with ammonia nitrate the middle of December. Every time this field had a growth spurt and the deer would feed here when they would feed nowhere else. It will not be a waste of money to put it out and with the right PH of the soil, you might be shocked at the results. Good luck.

150lbs per acre is exactly half the rate that we apply to our plots when we plant.

We put 200lbs per acre of AN in late December.

Most charts suggest 300-400lbs of 13-13-13 when planting.

We did not fertilize at planting and were going to wait a few weeks. Well then we had NO rain so we are thinking of hitting them this Saturday before the rain. From reading above, is this is a waste? Will 13-13-13 do or should we be heavier on AN?

Thanks

Just put down some AN yesterday. Plot is heavily overgrazed and hoping this will give it a boost

sort of a double edge sword on the AN. You put it down on a field that is already overgrazed and it pumps a shot of taste good to the field and starts back up and they hammer it down even more. But that is what you want, them coming in.

My soil samples always say 100# N per acre for oats and wheat. 60# per acre for rye. This is why I plant rye.

We do the same on that too.
