I'm sure this has been asked before, but after searching the forums, figured I'd see if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I have been out to Wheeler spanning the past week or so, did some sitting and did some scouting. We found multiple fresh tracks and poop, and even some tall grass where deer have clearly been laying down, so we figured we probably found some good spots. I know patience is a huge part of this, but I was wondering how many days you guys use a spot before you move on to the next thing? I'm sure I'm at a disadvantage since I can never stay out very long. I typically get out in the morning and have to leave by 9 in order to make it to work.

Along with this, anyone have any tips for hunting this land. Everything I have looked up consists of people saying they "don't know how to hunt it". Any general places to look? The stuff we scouted/sat in was basically a plowed soybean field from what it looks like. I'm thinking i need to head into the woods, but don't know where to go.

Sorry for the extremely general vague questions. I am loving just sitting out and enjoying the sun rise and peace and quite, but to be perfectly honest, I'm real ready to stick my first deer. Thanks guys!

I hunt wheeler some and I would give it a few times(3-5) at most before I move on. I also would try it at different times of the day. Some good hunting and some beautiful woods on wheeler. Shoot me a PM if you won't to discuss the refuge a little more.

I usually get where I can see pretty good at first when i do spot deer I will then move to 20 yards from their trail on the next hunt. at wheeler I look for fresh sighns because deer activity changes so often with pressure.
Another sighn that you have a good spot at wheeler is that you will find candy bar wrappers and soda bottles thrown around. if you find this you can rest assured that at least one person thought it was a good spot. I hate litter bugs.

Thanks for the tips. Yeah, I've noticed extremely obvious signs of other hunters/people. If only people cleaned up after themselves.

To be complete honest, I'm not sure the exact location. My friend has been driving, I just am along for the ride. By looking at the map, I'm pretty sure we are close to Penny Btms. Road

So we have been hunting off of Refuge Road, along the tree line of a soybean field. Have had NO luck seeing deer, just TONS of deer signs. Tracks and scat everywhere. I guess it's time to move on. I have heard that the Swamp area is good ,but I don't own waders so that will have to wait.

Get in the woods.

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

I only hunt the refuge been doing it for five years now with good luck. When I first started I would sit the same spot 4 or 5 times and never see anything. So I started changing spots every time with great success. Hunting pressure is everything up there I have killed 90% of the deer up there from 10 to 2 this time of year. Send me a pm and I will help you get that first bow kill

I haven't had luck there yet either. So 10-2 is gonna be my next strategy.

Human scent and pressure on public land makes you feel like you are truly hunting a ghost. Those deer lock-down when you combine those two! You will see tons of deer sign, but deer mostly move at night with a lot of pressure. Better off finding private land no one hunts if you really want to easily put some meat in the freezer!

Finding that is harder than killing a deer on public land.

I have killed two up there this year both does and passed on two bucks that hang out at one spot basket rack six and a four point. The reason 10 to 2 works so good right now is people are walking in and out at that time deer spook and if you figure the deer out they will come right to you that's the strategy I use and have one afternoon set up there where I didn't see deer.

I'm planning on trying to check out a spot for the first time ever on Friday on the northeast side while I am up that way for the weekend working. Haven't stuck one with the bow in 6 years, hoping to change that sometime this year!

Ive killed tons of deer from Wheeler.I killed 7 the first year I hunted it. The secret is so simple, your seeing sign the deer are there obviously. Find them they gotta be somewhere. I hunt different than 99 percent of people I don't use cover scent or keep my clothes in a scent free bag. I hunt the wind I find where they bed and kill them there. If you don't know where a deer of any kind is spending 90 percent of its time your out of the game. Another tip look for overlooked spots right by the road be it gravel or pavement those old wiley bucks will watch you park from there bed then move around freely.Stop hunting the obvious places if you see a beat down hunter trail going a certain way don'tgo there or do I wont mind.

Well, looks like I need to trek further into the woods. I guess honestly my two big hindrances are 1. I work two jobs so spending all day out in the woods is hard, and 2. I have type 1 diabetes and the wifey/myself don't like the idea of me being in the woods alone and having an issue with that. It's something I'm not really too worried about, but stuff happens.

Me and a small group of guys I hunt with prolly have a 90% kill ratio hunting wheeler. If your not seeing deer do something different. Just remember there ain't a place out there that hasn't been hunted.
