If you get up to TN get him a bottle of Willet. This, if you want a really smooth bourbon. It drinks more like a canadian whiskey. If you want to get him a quintessential small batch bourbon, go with Bookers.

Mix it up..Templeton's Rye if you can find it. This is great stuff too, if you want to do the Rye thing. I haven't been able to find it though.

What is your price point? Blanton's is about as good as it gets for a bottle that is easily found in most reputable stores. In that same price point, maybe a little cheaper, is Four Roses Single Barrel. That is found in most ABC stores. What is he normally drinking? You said you got him some JD reserve last year. That is technically Tennessee whiskey, not bourbon, but almost the same, and if he enjoys that then he'll enjoy the bourbon s recommended above. There's also bourbons with rye and bourbons with wheat. Maker's Mark and the Pappy Van Winkle are wheated bourbons. Maker's 46 is pretty darn good and is an easy sipper, about $50. W.L. Weller and Old Weller Antique are the same juice as in Pappy Van Winkle, only uounger. A lot of folks have found that .icing these two at 50/50 is pretty darn close to Pappy. You could get him a bottle of each of these for about $60-70 total. If he's drinking scotch this whole thing changes. Sounds like he's a good friend if you invite him over for Christmas. Life is too short to drink cheap whiskey. I haven't really thought of a price cap. I just want to get him something a little different and nice. He normally just buys a fifth of JD and works on it over a period of time. He just goes out on his deck in the evening with a little glass and sips and watches the sun go down. He's a good fella who misses his kids and being around my kids makes him and his wife happy. He's all the time helping me on projects and he watches over my place when I am gone. To show my appreciation and to let him and his wife enjoy a Christmas with children again I invite them over for a big breakfast and then we do gifts. They really enjoy it, and I can tell he misses the days his kids were little. Props to you for being a good guy!
