I finally got a chance to draw my bow on a deer. Sitting in a ground blind Monday night I see this nice 8pt come out at about 33 yrds. I pick up the bow, come to full draw.....and then it happened. The buck looked up and locked in on me. I'm thinking this is not happening to me. As I'm stuck at full draw for what seemed like a full minute not able to let down I see out of the corner or my eye another 8pt coming out behind him. The first 8pt turned to look at the second 8pt giving me a slightly better shot so I let it ride......2 inches high over his back. Shooting a single pin HHA adjustable sight. I thing I need to change to a 4-5 pin sight as I didn't really have any time to adjust the sight yardage when the buck came out causing the under compensation. Any thoughts on a quality EASY TO USE sight?

With a one pin site, know your hold over/under for your equipment and be prepared for having to make a 5yd up or down adjustment in that situation

What was your sight set on and where were you aiming on the deer?

I use a multiple pin sight so I don't have to use holdover.

Shaw, the sight was set at 35yrds tree line ranged from 33 to just under 40. With me holding for so long I'm sure my aim point wasn't the best. Sure I rushed the shot. A true learning experience for sure.

^this, with my hha, I leave it set on 27 yards and I'm good from 0-35 with no compensation.

I'll add that I rarely hunt woods open enough to shoot beyond that anyway.

Yes, maybe 2 inches low all the way to 35. But I'd rather miss my mark low that far out on account of deer ducking. This setup is what I'm comfortable with, ive experimented over the last few years with my setup to minimize the need to adjust my hha during crunch time and this is what works for me.

I shoot a bowtech admiral, 29 in draw 70#, easton axis 340s with 100 grain rage

Same here, I shoot bottom of my pin if further than 27 or top of pin if closer. I love my HHA. I shoot pse Evo with 29" draw, with 340 easton axis arras.

+1 to what Fireman says.

Except I have my pin set to 30 yds (I'm shooting 60#). 0-25, I just hold a couple inches low. 35 yds (my personal MAX), I hold it right on to account for the deer jumping the string

I have my top pin set for 30 yards. That gives me a true 0-30 yards without compensating. Then I have a 40, 50, and 60 yd pin.

another bit of advice that took me a while to learn. if deer are coming into a plot to feed, let them feed and calm down for a minute. the first thing they are going to do is analyze everything when they first step out. the other thing is if you wait a minute and let the deer get rid of the jitters of walking out into the open, you lesson your chance of getting busted by the deer following it that pops out into the plot right when you draw. third, letting them relax lessens your chance of the deer jumping your string.

Yeah c’mon. Daniel White

It's easy range find certain areas before the deer steps out into the woods. When you see what path he/she is going to take then you know.
Keep your HHA locked in at 30yds, shoot low if he/she is closer in. It's 10x easier to adjust closer in then further back. Had the deer been 33yds with me locked in at 30yds i would have used the bottom of my fiber optic rather the top of my fiber optic. I tend to set my sight using the top of my fiber, so i can use the bottom of the fiber as my 5yds adjust (which is about 1in-2in difference when aiming)

Just some thoughts to try.

THIS^^^^^^ is the single best piece of information posted. Something I've learned the hard way now twice in two seasons on two fine bucks. No need to rush it. They aren't going anywhere. Much easier said than done, however.
