About three more weeks, and the Tailgates are gonna drop. I know about 92.389% hate deer dogging, But I love about every second of it. Especially when my dad is there and I hear them dogs jump and head right towards him, then I hear him shoot, man I get some more excited. Even when my beagles jump a rabbit, they just aint nothing to replace that sense of mind I am in. I about got my dog truck fixed back up, new belts, thermostat, water pump, batteries, fan clutch, and a few more odds and ins. Now yall just go ahead and start your dog hating thread, while I stay over here on my thunder.. laugh

DW......you still hunt for the 'right' reasons.....fellowship, sharing, tradition and FUN!!!

Very little 'me' in dog hunting. I enjoy it myself. It just got to where the lease prices were so high that the blocks of land got smaller and smaller. Then, the drama starts! Even if the dogs never cross a line....the complaints come from people who don't want to be 'disturbed' by the sound of people 'driving', dogs barking and gunshots. The non-resident yuppies have just about won the war.

If there was a good club that dog hunted I could get into I think I would join. I dog hunted for over 30 years till we couldn't get enough large contiguous tracts of land we could afford to hunt on without infringing on other people. Now we just sit in a dang tree like some kind of bird. I would just like to hear a good race every now and then.

i've been on two deer/dog hunts. killed a nice doe on one of 'em. great tradition, but getting much more difficult to control.
one of the hunts was half a dozen of use with a single black and tan that was one of the smartest dogs i've ever seen. handler told him to slow hunt. never got faster than walking. deer seemed kind of relaxed until a good buck broke. fellow on down the line got him.
very effective. very exciting ...

I got invited to go to a dog hunting club around Thanksgiving and I am planning on taking my boy and my dad. It is how I grew up hunting and I'm more excited about going there than I am my high $ hunting spots where we "manage" and "harvest"

Dog deer hunting is one of the greatest hunting experiences of my life. Almost every fond hunting story in my life started out from releasing a pack of dogs.

Killed my first deer dog hunting. I have gotten away from it but still hold a special place for it.

I learned more about deer 'Driving' and following a pack of dogs in one year than most people can learn in a lifetime of sitting in a shooting house watching grass grow........

To me there is nothing more exciting than dog drives with a good group of men. I was raised dog hunting as a young boy. My uncle would put me in a cocker sack and throw me over his back...and off we went driving with couple other guys. I guess I was 7-8 yrs old at that time. All those men are dead and gone. Nothing like a sound of hounds moving through the woods. Of course deer hunting back in those days (70's) was different...and not as many hunters and big money as today. Good luck and share some pics. A lot of fun !

Your Uncle must have been a hell of a man, if he toted an 8 year old in a croker sack all day.

You know the more I think about it, I might join a dog club next year just to let my son experience a dog hunt. Break out the 12 Gauge Double Alt Buck.....that just brings back too many good memories. I actually saw on two separate drives...bucks that were crawling out of thickets on their bellies. As I reflect back, I can hear the sounds of men whistling, yepping, and hounds doing there thing. I always enjoyed petting the dogs and helping the older men feed them and water them down after a days hunt...then sitting around the fire while the dogs slept talking about where the next drive will be in the morning. Those were some good days !

I've dog hunted before and it is a lot of fun trying to cut the dogs off, and I'll even agree you probably learn more than sitting in a shooting house. But the people that stalk hunt have probably forgotten more about deer than the dog hunters know.

The world needs more people holding deer in pictures, and less people holding cameras in front of mirrors.

First time my Dad took me hunting was a dog hunt in Dickert, AL with my Uncle James. Had a doe bought run me over and I was hooked. Nothing like the sound of hounds on a hot trail!

Like dog hunting as long as i am not climbing a tree. Shot my biggest deer years ago in front of dogs. Nothing like that race. Just would like no dogs in wma or surrounding land during deer season.

You can't dog deer hunt on wma land and us small game dog hunters have just as much right as you to hunt public land.

Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

I hear you DeerNutz about having another dog. My daughter brought home a 4 month old black and tan mixed with beatle. I don't know what Im dealing with that, and another mouth to feed..... because yours truly will end up taking care of her before its over with, along with my old 11 yr old grey chin lab.

Me too. Been atleast 25+ since I heard them but how much fun it was. Seemed at the time I'd be freezing cold unless the dogs were headed our way. Then that cold turned to excitement. Sure was proud of that first 65lb doe my 20ga 870 finally connected with. There had been a coupe missed along the way.

If your decoy doesnt have holes in it, your not letting him get close enough... J.H.
