I have forty years of deer hunting experience and personally do not believe in, or use any scent blocking formulas or clothing. The most important factor is to get the wind in your favor. Yep.

I agree Peach. I do use some of the DDW stuff just to try and knock back some of the smell, but I know full well I'm not getting rid of all of it. Hunting the wind is the only true fail safe way.

Wouldn't that be a cover scent?

I still like the fresh earth stuff. It just smells like deer season to me. I think it does curb some of your scent, but not kill it completely.

I used to wonder about the fresh earth scent killer, then one day I was out in the woods putting up a stand after a light rain and I smelled the exact same scent. Have had that happen about a dozen times now, add to that some personal experiences with deer that where down wind of me and I will continue to use the stuff. Where I hunt there is no such thing as hunting down wind; the wind changes every couple of minutes regardless of which stand I'm at.

I just throw all my stuff in a scent free bag with baking soda, shake it up real good and that's it. But just like some of you i'll spray some acorn cover scent just because it makes me "feel" like hunting season, theres just something about it. Exactly what does an acorn smell like? Very little smell, to me.

I do wash my hunting clothes in scent free wash because I'd rather them not smell like Gain Tropical Islands. But the mornings of my hunts, I use the same soap and shampoo as I do every other morning. I just hunt the spot where the wind is in my favor.

Very little smell, to me. The Acorn scent stuff I've used smells like caramel to me, I've watched deer come in downwind and follow my trail in right to the tree after putting it on my boots. I've seen deer in the same area act all leery and turn away after using the exact same product. They can smell it, it may attract them or spook them depending on other circumstances. I've used vanilla extract cut 50/50 with water with similar results. I think any cover scent may mask your human scent and let deer get closer, or it may spook them and you probably won't have a clue what the difference is.

Personally I don't think the "find a hunter" studies with dogs have any bearing on how deer react. Cover scent probably masks your scent much better than it eliminates anything, but deer are usually spooked by smells they associate with humans, if they associate your cover scent with you being there - and they will if you use it often enough- it won't work the way you want it to.
